Goodness, you've been doing tri a long time, can easily recall Magnum PI no problem [;)] but can't remember a tri story. Was it Ironman Hawaii?
  • Its ok man, everyone knows Jesster seen me jumping into the water and just started chasing me from then. she still hasnt caught me!

Looks to be that way! My 2nd horse was an Anglo- more TB though and a right grumpy git. He was good at dressage though. Since then I've worked as a Polo groom and played a bit but not ridden for a while now. Jess, maybe we know each other then? Where do you play? And could do the Try a Tri thing....bit scared though lol

I used to love show jumping and cross country. Would one day like to get back into it but my daughter does the daring stuff on my horse now! Wow, what fun, breeding your own foal! You'll have to put piccies up when it arrives. Yes, come on all of you, come down to the (rather expensive) try a tri and we can have a barbi or something after

Bex, the Results club is the nicest ever-full of support for us newbies, short distance; 250m pool swim, 10 mile bike and 3 mile run. Loads of fit blokes and everyone out at their gates en route clapping you as you go past-makes you feel like a million dollars!

Worked for years for Lovelocks team, then for a patron over in hereford. played a bit but mostly schooling and stick and balling. havent sat on a horse for AGES as i work/live in cornwall now. was based at cirencester park. been chasing comanighttrain ever since....lol

we should do may 10th, with smileys, and see if we get any response. whaddaya reckon, girls?!?

Yeah I met Michelle at Zoom training- she seemed nice. How much is it? Need to check work obligations first too but distances seem ok... fit blokes? Pah- given up on them!

It was the last episode of season one titled ''Beauty knows no pain''.I only know that as I have the box set (purely for the one episode). The episode featured a tri based on the Ironman but with different distances which I think could have been due to the race franchise not allowing the tv company to use its copyright, but I could be wrong.

I only think that I have been doing it along time when I look back and think what alot of stupid stupid stupid stupid mistakes I made along the way.But as the sport progresses and the more it changes the more it stays the same,if you get chance try and get hold of Dave Scott's Triathlon Training. It is available through Amazon at a price but if you holiday Stateside you could pick up a cheap copy.It had one print from 1986,the techniques are very similar to the ones touted in modern journals and if I exclude Coneheads book,it is my prefered triathlon reference book for training. Some of the equipment is abit dated but it was 20+ years ago.His running technique is similar to the pose method, there is a mention to of drug abuse and blood doping(way before the puerto fiasco in spain). But I digress yes I am old (but not too old) tho' the bike porn thread does shock me.

Yeah Michelle is lovely.. £26.50 for non BTF or £22 for affiliated. Not too hilly on bike or run, nice little medal after too for finishers. Could probabs fit it around work as it starts at 7am on Sunday. A few go on the earlier waves so that they can get to work after

hmmm, ok I will have a think about that one. Am definitely interested though but need to check diary first. Early start will kill me though! Would be fun to get a few of us together though- put some faces to names so to speak
  • Cheryl6162Cheryl6162 Posts: 356
Te he - the bike porn is not for the faint hearted and those tri bars are way beyond the realms of decency!

I'll go on amazon later and see if I can find that Dave Scott book - I am one of those tedious people who has to read up on every single thing to do with anything I am involved in. Of course I had digested Coneheads illustrious journal and there is another one I liked for the ladies called the Slow Fat Triathlete, written along much the same vein and addresses one's need for a little light hearted lyricism when ploughing through the technical stuff once too often.

Great excuse for having a Magnum PI cd in your rack-keeps the street cred alive and burning.....

Righto, count me in on the 10th. I've just entered. Now where's me pen...?
  • Cheryl6162Cheryl6162 Posts: 356
The great thing about the early start is that there is very little traffic about and it also gives you the whole of the rest of the day to do whatever else you usually do (horse riding maybe??) or working if you really must. Probably should mention at this point that registration is between 6 and 6.30am....
  • Cheryl6162Cheryl6162 Posts: 356
Wooo Hooooo! You go girl!!! Never mind the pen-where's my sodding trainers-I need to get running if you lot are coming down!!!

The closest I got to Magnum P.I. cred was when my brother won the use of a car for the day in a competion,it was only one similar to the ferrari that featured in the programme.(this could also be posted on the do you know anybody that has won a competion thread).Books that I would recommend are ,'Becoming an Ironman' which is a collection of stories from around the world,'swim, bike, run, laugh',a little on the pricey side for a couple of hours read, but I could post it if you pm me,I thought 'Not usual behaviour' was a tad condescending.

If I was really nice I would say 'No, you do it too'. But I'm not! I need George - especially with the Jesster coming along too!
  • Cheryl6162Cheryl6162 Posts: 356
Have seen Swim, Bike, Run, Laugh advertised, reckon it might be my next read.

I was threatening to get involved for a couple of years and then I won entry to last year's London tri with four months' notice, so that kick started my trilife. Four events done now and a steady progression in times are keeping me keen :-)

    bopo - loved the story!

@ Cheryl-who is george? and who is doing the tri on the 10th? am i going to be all alone??!!
  • Cheryl and BexH - you two must be very near me! Maybe we should start an east dorset ladies tri club - 3 members already!

Me, well I'm a proper proper newbie, training (well, kinda) for Eton women's. Never been sporty, but had a bike or two (mainly for ease of pub access). Did a couple of 5 kms, tried a 10 and bust my shins - ouch! Love water - mainly being on it though - but can't swim crawl for toffee (lessons start next Tuesday) although I can breaststroke well.

So, too many hangovers, enjoying my biking but wanting some speed, running but with no goal, I ended up in a curry house with a tri mate and agreed to give it a go - had to go through with it once sober!

The try-a-tri clashes with our big sailing training day - which I really *can't* miss, no really, and I can't be knackered either, so I'll be off to Eton for my first time! Mind you, wimborne is still tempting - but with a month's notice I would be embarrassingly unprepared! Super slow swim, followed by reasonable bike (we love bike) probably followed by limping. Hmmmm

Must do some open water before I go too... Any ideas for an east dorset newbie (often seen in poole harbour swimming after my boat)

Roped into playing football for the first time since primary school: broke thumb. Thought triathlon would be safer (till I was knocked off my bike on an A road last year !)

I was looking for a challenge as I'd become slightly too attached to my couch....a friend of mine said they were looking to do a tri and told me you can do baby ones...well put an idea in my head..and the rest is history...(note, they never ended up doing one - lazy git!)

i did my first tri last summer.... brighton tri...was not brilliant...water shocked me but did ok on cycle (5th female) and then fluffed it in the run...but it didn't matter...i was on such an adrenaline rush that that was it....did a duathlon in feb (3rd female) and have another tri on 4 may, london in august and looking for something in between...

one thing i love about this forum is that i can rant and rant about tri and none of you think i'm nuts! (well not yet anyway [;)]) i've learnt not to go on to my mates or work colleagues cause they are starting to think i'm a widdle strange....

Jess - George is Chris (my sons) road bike! He's called George as he's a Dawes (only obvious to fans of Shooting Stars!) I will be there as I have entered and we're working on Bex aren't we? Are you going to drive down that morning? Wish I had a spare room for you - Chris did offer you a place in his bed if needed.....funny that....
  • Cheryl6162Cheryl6162 Posts: 356
@Jellybelly - I am in Wareham and Bex is near Bournemouth so can't be too far if you're a Dorset girl too. If you want a quite sea swim I suggest you haul off down to Arne beach, nice and peaceful with a decent bit of current in the centre but nothing too killer. You can swim across to one of the islands if you wanted and practise your T1's.

Shame you can't make the Try a Tri; reckon it would be a great laugh with us lot together...
  • JessterJesster Posts: 482
If i drove i'd have to leave about 3am so i guess i'll come over the night before! i'll go stay at a b and b, my friend lives in wimborne but he doesn't have a v. understanding missus so that option is out!! oo-er!

C'mon Bex! It'll be a riot! we could even skip for the whole run, arm in arm.......sigh.....

Bringing the thread crashing back on topic: I'm having difficulty remembering - at one point I was a bit sniffy about tri being "proper" - mainly because I didn't like the idea of transitions being part of the race - A "How fast can you get dressed" race kind of makes darts seems like a sport. I've got over that now though [:)]

OK - Mid life crisis. Needed to get fit. Realised that just running would lead to too many injuries - so the idea of cross training really appealed. Also like the body shape of triathletes - more balanced than a runner/cyclist. Can't/Couldn't swim, so really wanted the challenge of doing something that I could never do before.

Love the strategy, love the tactical thinking, love the smart training - really like a sport that allows you to use your brain, rather than just strength/speed. Love the emphasis on age groups. Love the fact that people who are really good at one sport won't be doing tri - so that people, like me, who are OK, rather than good, get a bit of a boost[:)]

I'm an over competitive over achieving neurotic. So it is the ideal sport for that personality type.

Of course, I still need to do my first tri. Roll on being able to swim (I would do one now if the swim distance was 25m).

But so excited about first duathlon next week!
