So I finally got a session with a swimming instructor yesterday and he was one that actually specialises in. His advice was that I should stop breathing.

Apparently I'm just building bad habits so I should get the rest of my technique right first and then worry about the breathing. We also did some kicking exercises and after initially going nowhere and then going backwards I finally managed to start going forwards. Not fast but it's definitely better than backwards.

He also said I should definitely try and get in a sprint or supersprint before October. He suggested Eton as being the perfect beginner triathlon but the dates for it don't seem right. I'm thinking my ideal is a super sprint in August, Sprint in September and then ready for Olympic in October.

So can anybody recommend any triathlons that fit the bill?

There's a sprint event in Bognor the second Sunday of August: http://www.bognortriclub.co.uk/#!/cuy0

Definitely perfect timing and it makes sense for my first trip to be pool based but it seems kinda sick and wrong to go to the seaside and then jump in the pool

Shadebug, Hever tri has a variety of options at the back end of September including a sprint ish tri. And there are a few hills meaning its a bit of a tougher run out than just your standard supersprint

depends where you are.. there are some great pool swim tri's around later in the season - highworth (near swindon) is mid-sept and is a good race. nice course, relaxed atmosphere.

dbmax have the portishead sprint in mid-august.

freebird have the skipton tri in mid sept.

xtramile have several events, with a late sept sprint in manchester.

you could also think about some duathlons - multisport practice without the pesky swimming bit.
