Sham acupuncture?

Hi all,

I’m a newbie here and want to know whether acupuncture is effective for ACL injuries? This is for my brother. He’s an athlete and now suffering from ACL injuries. He is not able to practise or even to walk. So his physio in Toronto recommended him a sham acupuncture for fast recovery. What is sham acupuncture? Which one is more effective? I wonder whether he can restart his practice after the treatment. Please help me in this concern. Thank you in advance.
