Swimming getting a tad dull....

Hi all,

I am not a great swimmer, I have always struggled a bit with endurance, but for some reason not speed particularly, I recently got my 400 down to 5:45 which is pretty good for me, and at a push I can cover 100m hard in 1:10ish.

But as I'm competing in OD this year and the odd middle distance I need to increase my endurance. But I'm struggling with motivation in the pool! I don't mind the shorter sets, but the prospect of doing 60+ lengths kills me. Out of sheer boredom the most I'm doing at the moment is 30ish.

So does anyone have any tips on increasing endurance without the bore factor of lengths and lengths of continuous swimming?

Also one more Q. I have never really used time much in the pool, just RPE and the occasional look at the pace clock. I only have a garmin 305 at the mo, but was thinking of getting a crappy stopwatch thats waterproof to use, but how to you keep checking the time? do you pause at each length?

    Hi Tom hope your well.

Your swimming is much faster than mine and 5.45 i would say is pretty good!

My swrimming is getting better but you don't see much written about banging out length after length as stroke quality can fade.

    What about a pyramid set 50m then 100, 200, 300 , 400, then down with say 30s recovery?

    Or 4 x 400 or 4 x 800 sets?

Or, are there and masters or tri swim clubs you can go along to always pushes you on a bit?

check out following thread, posts #24-27: http://forum.220magazine.com/fb.asp?m=24370&key=sportcount
  • thanks benny. been wondering about them for ages!
  • For the longer training sessions I tend to do sets of 200m or 400m holding a pace and a set recovery period. So 200m on 2:00 mins, or 400m on 7:30.

I can't wait for Tooting Bec Lido's to open for the 'spring'. It's a good 90m long and that helps you get through distance like no other!
