New wheels. Which is better?

I am planning to upgrade my wheelset in the near future and had a query for someone with a good knowledge of bikes and wheels.
Should I
a) Get a pair of Bontrager X-Lites.
Or
b) Get a more expensive front wheel (like the HED one Chrissie Wellington uses) and then upgrade the rear wheel when finances permit.
Which would offer the greater benefit in a race? [8|]
