Distances

Hey,

Im pretty new to triathlons and Im hoping that someone on here can clear something up for me. I have read alot about distances but never quite clear on what distance is what!?

Like what is middle distance? Olympic distance? Sprint distance? Ironman? Ironman 70.3?

Hopefully someone can clear these up

Cheers

  • Hi

There is no guaranteed rule as distances can vary slightly from race to race, but the normal distances are:

Super sprint: 400m swim, 20km bike, 5km run

    Sprint: 750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run

    Olympic: 1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run

I'm afraid I'm not certain of the longer distance races but they are roughly (and someone else can confirm/amend):

    Ironman: 3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42km run (i.e. a 26 mile marathon)

Ironman 70.3: Half the above distances, i.e. 1.9km swim, 90km bike, 21km run

    Hope this helps

    Mike

  • Further to the above, Middle distance refers to races that are longer than Olympic distance (Ironman is a brand name, so not all longer races are Ironman)
