hi, just noticed comments about getting out of east London/Greenwich/Lewisham and routes etc - I am in limehouse and know a couple of reasonable routes getting out of london into essex or down to kent - if you need suggestions for where to go, contact me and i'll put them on mapmyride or something. good luck with the training!

well i had a nice run today 7 miles up and down the hills in Greenwich Park, lovely sunny day hills galore and i am now starting to regret adding the extra 2 miles more than planned. still i'm going for a sim this afternoon so i should feel better after that - i hope.

    Monday: RICE + Platelet donation

Tuesday: Visit to GP. Get some anti-inflammation tablets. More RICE

    Wednesday: RICE

    Thursday: RICE

Friday: Back to work: Not too taxing on the leg. Swelling starting to go down. Second consultation with GP (a different one this time). They are writing the referral letter for the knee specialist. Just need to OK this with the insurance, and off I go!

Saturday: As the swelling goes down, range of movement is returning. Took the dog for a 10 min walk. A bit uncomfortable. But not too bad. Can get up and down stairs reasonably well. Will probably stop the tablets after today as the side effects are a bit iffy.

    --

Sunday: Either a swim in the morning, or a trip to Oulton Park to watch the Duathlon that I won't be doing. Depends on how good the leg is for driving.

    Monday: Rest

Tuesday: Down in London. Staying in the hotel where you can use the YMCA pool and fitness centre for £4.00 for the entire stay. Will try to use the pool.

    Wednesday: Another swim

    Thursday: Rest

Friday: Rest (don't think I will have time for a swim). Might get a trip to the Gym in. Work on quads - but mainly stretching.

Saturday. Will try some gentle spinning on the Turbo. Just to get it moving again.

    Sunday: Swim...

That's enough forward planning. Really, just letting the swelling go down, then start off with swimming, then gradually introduce cycling and gym work. Will wait and see what the Quack has to say.

Had a great day today, went for a swim this morning and managed about 5oo or 600m. then i went for a ride on the bike, covered about 17 miles, then I ran 4 miles for a 'recovery run' well it started out like that at 9:30 miles then the 2nd 2 miles were about 8:30 so at least it was a good negative split and i feel better as a result of having done it. So that was good.

The "Easy Freestyle" DVD is a most excellent accompaniment. I got it from Amazon for £18.

Only managed 4 lengths (100m)of this morning's swim before giving up because the knee hurt too much. Thought it would be OK. But it wasn't. Back on the beer instead. Bit of gardening in the sunshine.

    i love reading this thread!

yeah moonshine thats fab, at least now you sort of know what you're expecting. that's a lot less stressful than going into it blind.

everyone has done so much!! i took it easy all week until today (i usually train twice a day but just did once a day this week so as not to irritate knee). am loving the swimming at the moment!! x

most important thing I learnt today - talc is fab BUT NOT if you empty the tub in your socks as it changes into boulders during bike and you have to remove solid talc from socks before doing run[:)]

    No enough, again!

Had the week off work and before hand i thought i would have my best weeks training ever. Turned out completely differently, got swept up doing other stuff like decorating (what else do you do on your week off?) and ended up doing less, managed a few 5k runs, and 40k & 20k ride and a few swim sessions but in all seriousness, its not enough and i will know about come next sunday (1st tri).

I think that is pretty sensible. You're probably doing too much - and an easy week will do you in good stead. You don't want to do too much next week either: a bit of quality at the beginning of the week, then getting get ready, practising transitions etc.

You need to get to the point where you are really chomping at the bit !

Zero since Easter as I had a laparoscopy on Tuesday, was 2 nights in hospital and am very sore!

I had a pretty unpleasant time and the diagnosis was not to my liking so have not just lost some fitness, but also my mojo a little. Don't feel as totally consumed by triathlon as I was before my surgery and want it back so that I can focus back on my training when I'm back on my feet. I have a full season ahead of me, starting on May 31st and need to be firing on all cylinders - and I mean metally as much as physically.

Anyone got a pep talk for me?

ouch...sending some good vibes down the tinternet line...

blurredgirl....have you looked at the Hoyts story Cheryl posted...v inspirational....

You've got the hard part over...take the time to recover so you don't hurt yourself and just go for it...having your first tri on 31st May should be a pretty good incentive to get going...

Hey BlurredGirl - I'm relying on you to get me through my injury woes. Your struggles put mine to shame. So don't give up!

And you have those new Newtons! They've been sat in the cupboard, gathering dust. I can hear them calling out just to be used! You owe it to them, if nothing else.

Take it easy. Just get outside. A gentle run, when you're not too sore. Everything will fall into place. The calm, the space. Just you and that body - show it who's boss!

Hey our kid - you'll soon be up and at it again. When you first come out of hospital you always feel very fragile-thats what they are designed to do. But no-one knows your body like you do (although granted the guy who did the laparoscopy could probably pick out your insides in an identity parade better than perhaps you can!) but only you know what you can do. You have been through one heck of a lot up to now and I bet everyone told you not to do what you have already done, but you knew it would work and it obviously did.

I don't know what your diagnosis is but I'm willing to bet that given another day or two, where the soreness and fear has disipated a little, you will find yourself, in an unguarded moment, thinking of ways that you can do what you want and need to do...

Once a triathlete, always a triathete. you have a big big heart girl, so how about getting out there and taking it for a run? xxxx

    Shucks you guys. *Sniff*

Big thanks Jack Hughes, Brizzichick and Cheryl. Just what I needed. You are utter stars. I will sleep on your advice and report back. Stitches come out tomorrow, plan is to try a gentle swim midweek.

I've already seen the Hoyts video - to watch it now in my state would reduce me to a blubbering wreck!

    blurredgirl.

ps - Jack - the Newtons are literally vibrating under my chair. It's hard to keep them leashed.

have no idea what clicked tonight and it probably won't tomorrow but found myself doing 10 straight crawl lengths at the end of 65 lengths - so relaxed that realised wasn't doing the usual thought pattern of 'now breath'[;)]

I'm exactly the same! If I become distracted and think about something else, everything goes right - smooth swimming, easy breathing. As soon as I start thinking about what I'm doing it all goes to pot and my brain decides I'm suffocating!

Cheryl, moonshine, You two are very lucky, if i stop thinking about what i'm doing i tend to sink... i think that my legs are just too heavy (and my form too poor) to keep me high in the water unless i really focus on it. If i stop, legs sink, followed by slowing down then the rest of me sinks too. PS good going moonshine

This week i have been very lazy, i unfortuantely had stuff on both monday and tuesday night and didn't get up early as i had planned to get out before work. So to try and make up for it, yesterday was the cycle commute - kept it on the big ring even up the (slight) hills and powered the whole way there and back (abou 17 miles or so in total) ran at lunch time, tempo session PRE 7 managed 2.4 miles at 7:30 pace - which is a big thing for me as i had plateau'd at 8min miling for the last few months, so to start getting below that and not feeling like i was dying was fantastic! I was going to go swimming but had to work late. Swim tonight, then run tomorrow lunchtime and i am only going to be 5 hours short of my target for this week by the end of the week. Tha London marathon will get in the way of my weekend plans though as no long ride in the morning, or run at lunch time as they'll still be going by then i think.

After having seen Moonshine's post about doing a tri in training i'll be doing that on saturday i think... i'm a little nervy tbh.

I hate you all! The Bianchi (aka The Beast) is goading me in the front room, the freshly won Newtons are quivering under my chair and my goggles are peeking hopefully over the top of my swim kit while I sit on my ar*e on the sofa.

I have been going out for walks and tentatively 'jogged' across the road the other day to avoid being mown down (ow ow ow) and do plan some sort of a swim tomorrow. No idea how this is going to go, could be anything from some satisfying lengths in the medium lane to holiday breaststroke in the slow lane.....but I have to get going again or I will go nuts!

Good news is that the mojo is returning and I'm up for it again. Had a classic triathlon dream the other night where I won my age group! (yeah, right). So it's all there in my head again. This is great as I was really worried last week when I thought I'd lost the mental umph.

So....just need to get back on my feet and then my bike.

So in terms of training - I have walked twice a day since Sunday......
