It's offical I'm a wimp

moonshine,

before this thread is derailed, I do sympathise with you. I have a 20% gradient where I always aim to go up before heading home. It is a total beast of a hill and I've biked down it. Its windey as well which makes it more interesting.

All I say is that sometimes the risks are not worth it and taking it easy downhill is sometimes better.

Still this could open up a hill porn thread!!!!

set off on what I knew was a hilly bike ride - 3 11% hills up with a very fetching 20% up and then down - managed the 11% and managed the 20% up though sure that the passing ambulance had a think about stopping to see to me rather than where they were supposed to be going[:'(] But wimped out completlely riding down said 20% felt like I was just going to land straight on my nose - quite glad really as after finishng sliding down said hill there was a stoncking great pot hole across road that would have fitted my front wheel - sigh looks like some downhill practice[&:][&:]

i'm sure i am not alone with this either... its not so much the speed, and the bends (unless they are REALLY tight)... its the lack of knowledge of potholes and road surface vagaries(OK, you can check this out witha slow descent first of course... to a degree) but more importantly the complete lack of control of anybody else... cars, yes... but other road users - walkers, cyclists even, horses, dogs that run out.

I also know that "once you are over Xmph does it matter if you come off"... but its still not easy!

Sounds like fate shock its head at your downhill thoughts.

Just remember to keep looking about 10 metres in front when downhilling at speed so you can take emergency action if required. Like pot holes. drains and cats!

I wimp out on big downhills [:o]. I get down in the drop handlebars so that I can keep my fingers on the brakes and this lets me go a bit faster, but on a steep downhill I don't trust myself not to fall off.
