Hiring bikes abroad

having earlier this year raced abroad it was a fantastic experience - but the hassles and cost of taking the bike was immense. Its probably justifiable for a 70.3 or full IM, but its hardly worth the effort (let alone the cost) for a OD or even sprint distance. With friends around Europe it would be great top double up a visit with a race... so the option would be to maybe hire a bike near the venue.

Does anybody know whether such services are "typical" and what the reality is like of using then, and costs etc?

    i think tritans and kidstardust hired bikes for escape from alcatraz, so they didn't have to lug their precious steeds half-way around the world. if memory serves then ksd had a spesh rubadubdub and tritans a felt something. they might be able to describe their experiences, whether they booked ahead and all that.

    Alternatively, you treat yourself to a new bike over there and only pay the shipping costs one way!!!!!!!
