Why 220?

The question is in the title really. I assume it is a significant target or respectable time for an Olympic distance. But is there anything else to this?

Regards, Derek.

  • Oh I always assumed it was to do with the heart rate calculation thing.

    HRmax = 220 ? age
  • Any other ideas?

    Rounder version of 226? 3.8k swim 180k bike 42.2k run?
  • I did read somewhere that it originates from the max hr calculation formula.
  • I think your all wrong

    My mate tells me it's the amount of times in 24 hours you sh%t yourself after signing up for your first Iron Man
  • It means 'Second To None' - I was wondering about it too, so I googled it.

    Either way, this forum is cool and I've been drinking,

    Pat ;-)
  • It's the HR calculation thing - pretty sure I read that in the anniversary issue with the reprint copy of the first ever edition.

    Although I quite often remember reading things that weren't written down but back up my opinion. And have also been drinking.
