trainers ok and erm.. up top question!

Hey all

are running trainers ok for cycling in too? I dont have any cycling shoes with clips ( kind of been advised to not used these for my first TRi) so was thinking I could just cycle in my running trainers and then they are on also for the run section - this ok?

also any tips for us girlies on what to wear under swimsuit so I dont get the "bouncing around" on the run section - if you get what i mean!

Have been advised a regular sports bra but these arent made of swimsuit material and will just hold onto water.. would that pose a prob?

cheers all

Don't tell the others, but I still use toe clips and cycle in races in my running trainers. You will save a few seconds in transition but you will lose more time than you save (as I understand it) on the bike leg as cycling with clip-in pedals and proper bike shoes is more efficient.

I know the above is true but to get a reasonable set of pedals and shoes is going to set me back approaching a hundred quid, so I haven't bought any yet.

You will be fine doing your first tri in your trainers, it's perfectly acceptable as long as you appreciate that this will slow you down a little bit. (I assume you're not trying to win the race). It will also be one less thing to think about in transition on the day.

I'd echo the comment above; it really depends on what your aim is. If you just want to get round, have fun and set yourself a bit of a marker for future tris then trainers and clips will be fine. If you want to do a good time and be 'competative' then clipless is the way forward. If you really want to go for it then tri-specific shoes, already clipped in are what the pros and top age groupers use.

If you do go for clipless, make sure you are happy unclipping. I fell off my bike at some traffic lights when i first got mine and almost got ran over by a white van. The adrenaline rush got me up the next hill like Lance Armstrong!

thanks for replying guys, am a bit confused tho. how can I have toe clips if I am using my running trainers? they arent compatible.. or am i thinking of something else here.. and nah, aint goin for a win or a Pb.. just want to get round my first sprint tri without giving up!

so time doesnt really matter. I would love to do well but if I can just complete the first one without dragging my arris along I will be pleased!

so.. set my running trainers up next to my bike and just use them.. should i go for socks? I always run in socks!

AND.. should I invest in some tri running shoes? whats the difference? are they just the quick slip on kind? or can I use my regular running ones for now? gawd, so many questions, but I need to ask them!

    cheers

Toe clips actually mean the cages that go on the peddles. Clipless peddles refer to the ones that you clip into using special shoes. Confusing i know, but there you go!

When you have wet feet you will take an age to get them on. Just make sure your shoes fit you well and that you can run in no socks. Do this pre-race - blisters during the run leg are no fun at all. I find that a bit of wetsuit lube on the heel does the trick for me.

You can run in any shoes you want. But i (and most other people on this forum) would certainly advocate getting to your local running shop and getting fitted for a 'proper' pair. I did this last year and it's the best thing i have done. I ended up with a really nice pair of Triumph 5 that fit like a dream and (in my head) make me faster than the nike air max i used before.

I would say that specialist triathlon running shoes would not really help you though. Just a good solid pair of well fitted running shoes will sort you out. Elastic laces are good for a speedy transition...

To clarify, toe clips are these things:-

    [image]http://myc5.nl/safety/toe clips.jpg[/image]

ie a cage with a strap attached to a regular flat pedal. You can use ordinary trainers with these.

ahaaa! I know them as toe cages! thats why I was confused then!

and re my running trainers, they are specially fitted ones, I am a runner and know all about running in the right shoes etc wouldnt dream of not.. I just meant are there a "tri" specific running shoes I can be looking at? I am ok with the running side of things but this is tri..

    just wondered

thanks for your help jules, appreciate it! :-)

Ah sorry for trying to teach you how to suck eggs! There are indeed tri specific run shoes. But I wouldn't bother. Elastic laces in your running shoes will do the job.

re top half - depends on how statuesque you are[:D] The tri tops that you can swim in seem to have an inbuilt bra but not necessarily of the truley confining variety and the upside is that the shots have some padding for the bike leg- was a thread where we talked about the new shock absorber swimers with proper bras in but so new that no real feedback re how good

I bought the shock absorber tank top off ebay and it arrived yesterday. Although it does have a proper bra built into it I found it wasn't supportive enough to run in, i am rather ahem...staturesque though! I'm guessing that the swim wear will be along similar lines so I think you would be fine if you have an average size chest. Bit small on the sizing though!
  • meakiemeakie Posts: 124
erm put it this way, they arent small![:)]

so i will need some support! its ok for these waif triathlete chicks with no chest who can run in tri suits and nowt else.. gawd

I wish I could! i usually run wearing 3 layers - bra, tight vest top and another top just to keep things under control! God knows what I'm gonna do when summer comes [:D]

If it makes you feel any better, even skinny tri chicks if they run with no support will find gravity will get its revenge at some point, its all about coopers ligaments & how strong they are (or not) & relative to size small breasts move around just as much as larger breasts, coopers ligaments stretch & south we go..don't ask me how/why I know this.

I'm intrigued, Britspin. How come you are such an expert on Cooper's ligaments and breast-bounce?

    don't ask me how/why I know this.

    Oh, my mistake. Sorry.[:D]

Frankly whoever makes the 'bra shelf' contraptions and thinks they'll do anything to stop breasts going where they damn well please obviously doesn't possess a pair of their own - working on the OH's principle that more than a handfuls a waste - which is just as well as otherwise he'd be sorely disappointed- bra shef things are rubbish I just can't bear the idea of yet another layer - maybe we can alter number belts to provide support as well[8|]

I doubt she's plastic. Most likely a carbon based lifeform - but possibly a carbon/soreen mix
