Found this, might be useful so I'll pass it on.

The mapping software is free, and once you have it you can draw an area of the country you want and download the OS map. Then plan routes, get altitude changes, distances etc. I got from Nottingham to below Milton Keynes and from Birmingham to Peterborough (approx) for £10. Compatible with GPS I think (not got one).
Live on border of two predefined areas so Memory map would have been over £100 for the same. Not immediately intuitive but online tutorials to help with what to do.
