Port de Soller - Swimming Training

I'm heading out to Port de Soller in Mallorca for a week at the end of May and keen to get in lots of open water swimming training whilst I'm there ready for Challenge Roth. Has anyone ever visited this spot and swam in the bay? It would be great to get some general info: safety advice; suitability for a decent length session (at least 3km); lifeguard presence; and if there are any organised swims/clubs that I can buddy up with to save my husband having to stand on the beach at 6am with binoculars.
