Hi all, can anyone give me advice on cramp as i have done two duathlons with a break in between and each time i suffered cramp on the bike and through the second run.
Thanks for your reply and sorry for delay in return, i tend to only take water on the bike as other drinks seem to make me feel sick whilst exercising hard. someone suggested trying to take a salt tablet the day before, but when i asked a pharmacist about it he just suggested that i warm up properly instead of which i already know the importance of.
can't really add to the advice posted by Stuart, however, a good way to relieve crap immediately post race is to lie on your stomach, bend the offending leg so your foot is sticking in the air and get a mate to gently wiggle your foot. Sounds mad[&:] but the relief you'll feel is fantastic, plus you get a well earned rest. Know how you feel with the fuelling up issue, lost count of the number of times I've had to break up a training ride with bouts of vomiting. I've found Musashi sports drinks to be a little less heavy, but it's a case of experimenting and finding what's right for you. Good luck.
Some energy drinks can be a bit heavy but just becasue it tells you to mix X scoops in X ml of water doesn't mean you have too! I had this problem a while back and now use high5 4:1 but mixed weaker than what the label says you should! The label tells you to mix 75g with 750ml (1:10) which I found a bit strong and caused me to feel sick during hard or race pace efforts [&o], After some experimentation I have now started to use 60g in 1 litre (1:6) and found that this is much lighter on the stomach, but also enough to help prevent cramp! [:D]
I believe warming up properly, drinking enough water during each bike ride, and taking some sort of "salt tablet" can all benefit you and help prevent future cramps.

Cramps are caused by involutary muscles not relaxing fully after contracting. This can get more frequent as we get older.
The cause can be dehydration and/or excessive loss of sodium within your system (lost through sweat).
What drink do you use whilst on the bike?
Stuart.
