Tri in a Pool?

Just a quickie.

Can someone explain to me how 100 competitors can take part in a 600m swim-based pool? I think the Alnwick Triathlon is pool-based.

Is it not mayhem, or are there staggered starts?

I'm sure there's an obvious answer but i am intrigued as to how it works!

Normally there are staggered starts with people grouped together based on their estimated swim times. Otherwise it could be very interesting.

One thing you may hear, is 'ducking'

This means the competitors are staggered starts, usually about 30 seconds, and you start roughly with the people who swim the same speed as you. Then you have to 'duck' under the ropes to get to the next lane to start your next two lengths.

So if you can practice this at your local pool. It makes a world of difference come race day.
