Ironman 'weekend'?

Maybe this is an indication of things to come, but the triathlete turns up 1 hour before the race finishes and goes home when he finishes some 8 to 16 hrs later but the volunteers work longer and are often there for 20+ hours 2 days of 20+hrs volunteering in hot temps would start to take its toll. Some races often struggle to find volunteers for one day let alone two. This is probably one reason.

Now you have to start to enter qualifying races for mdot events.

Maybe you should mail the IM-organization with this question, because it can potentially become an even bigger problem in the future, since triathlon is rising in competitors exponentially.

Maybe they can give you the answers or maybe you give them something to think about?

Sorry I forgot to add a point about qualifying slots for the world champs, two races would have to divide the slots 50-50 between days one and two,but only if there was the same number of competitors for each race, unless each day had separate age groups. Then there would be the angry locals complaining of two consecutive days of road closures.

I agree with conehead that the races are reaching critical mass although the 70.3 series has reduced it slightly. It just seems to be the M dot races so people are obviously chasing a trip to Hawaii, but for the ones that just enjoy going long there are plenty of done M dot races around the globe available but they do not seem to have the Kudos surrounding them which is sad.
