Recovery weeks

I am working on my Ironman 70.3 training programme and am stumped when it comes to recovery weeks - Is their a rule of thumb regarding recovery weeks and what percentage you should be doing or is it better to listen to your body and decide from the shouts and screams it makes!

  • I think that the volume with which your body is telling you to stop is a pretty good indicator of the need to take a rest. The only problem is that most active/competitive/sporty people take pride in pushing themselves and as a result tend to overdo it.

With me, after overdoing it in order to prove the point many times the advice i was given was:

Have at least 1 rest day a week, 1 easy week a month and 1 easy month a year. With at least 1 week in a year where you don't do any exercise at all.

    Hope this helps.

Joe Friel's Triathletes Training Bible also gives you some good advice on this.
