Suspected shin splints - advice?

So I have never had shin splints before but went for nice hilly/fast session the other day and now i get a pain up right shin when I run, I am OK to walk/cycle/swim but want to get some run training in ASAP.

How do I know if it is shin splints? How long does it normally take for minor case of shin splints to clear up? How can i promote healing and how can I prevent it recurring?

Shin splints is a coverall term for several differing but similar problems, so it is hard to be difinitive. That said I would focus on ankle mobility, rotation clock & anti (this will make them burn..20-30 each direction) point & lift toes, stretch both calf & anterior tibialis & massage the muscle itself. Avoid any big jumps in distance or intensity in your running.

Not sure if this is any use, but a tip I was given for pain relief from shin splints was to fill polystyrene cups to 3/4 full with water and put them in the freezer. When you get shin splints next time tak out the cup, and tear off the top to expose the ice and roll it up and down your shins.
  • My track coach taped up some of our runners and it seemed to help some of them. The ice trick didn't work for me.

Here are some websites that might help.

I've had them before - about 8 years, and when I started to get the same feeling towards the end of last year, I took a few days out, that didn't help, so I went out and got some new trainers, my current pair were getting towards the end of their useful life, but getting the new pair sorted me out nicely, again though, go to the docs and find out exactly what you have, then you are in a better position to treat it.
  • Was just being a big jessie. Laid off the running for a few days then raced and it was fine - just got to get round to starting training around my horrendous shift patterns and facebook addiction now.
