If red is so fast why does the leader of the tour de france always have to wear yellow ?

Anyone know how the tradition of the yellow jersey in the tour de france occurred ?

can you imagine what would happen if you could get orange trisuits!?
  • It's obvious - he has to wear yellow as a handicap. If he was allowed to wear red then none of the other riders would ever be able to catch him and the race would be over after the first stage. Whereas, if you make him wear a pants colour like yellow (or green for the top points scorer) then they automatically ride slower and it gives all the other riders a chance to catch up.

The Yellow jersey originates from one of the original sponsers which was a paper called L'Auto now called L'Equipe which is the sports newspaper in jolly old France which had its paper coloured yellow, the same principle goes for the Pink jersey (or red one that has been washed alot) in the Giro d'italia ,the newspaper sponsers in Italy had/have pink paper.
