passing time on the turbo

I was wondering how you people kill time on the turbo during winter time? (yes ,I know riding is a possibility, but besides that?).

I really get bored when on the rollers for longer then a half hour. The damn thing is in my garage, so no connection for a tv there.

What do you guys do to make turbo training count as a workout (since I think 20 minutes of automatically pedalling is a good serious workout), and make it less boring.

Ditto. I'm in an Oasis place at the moment. Also, quite often I spend time wishing I'd put the cat out - 'miaow, miaow' gets tedious after a while. Some friends of mine watch tv (you can't), and the more hardcore types just focus on their pain I think. Music seems like a good compromise between the two.
  • I use music and use Spinervals on the laptop..!!
  • If anyone has a laptop/ dvd player than movies always work for me- have a subscription to lovefilm so that works!! Also, get hold of "whatever it takes" dvd- inpsirtational! Basically follows a set of pros around for a year as they train for Ironman.

Spinervals also great as is the CTS (Chris Carmeichal (spelling??) trainign DVDs

  • Music all the way.

I listen to quite a lot of drum n bass, such as pendulum, often the beat is approx 180 bpm which helps me keep my cadence at 90!

Not a bad idea, using the laptop.

I didn't want to buy an extra tv for the garage (no connection anyway) and an extra dvd player.

But I do have a laptop with dvdplayer to take with me there.

Are there any people who know where to get some spinervals dvds second hand(originals are quite pricy, since one does need more than one, to keep that boredom away for more then 3 sessions).

  • GHarv, whatever it takes is actually a crappy romcom, apologies!!! I meant this:

have a shop around though, tends to be a bit pricey as not wide release. Think ebay have one for £15

did a half hour turbo in the garage today, in company of some music.

Was ok for the first twenty minutes, but got a little bored after that though. Guess nothing beats the real stuff.

Will try the laptop-dvd option next time!

Put a very eclectic mix on the ipod (jazz to thrash and everything in between) put it on shuffle and nail it

Ahh, the old association / dissociation argument.

I tend to swing between the two approaches; it depends what's on the TV at the gym. Sometimes tuning in to the pain is good!

I don't have a turbo trainer (yet), so not an issue but I will probably use music when I get one.

It took me a significant amount of time to realise that wasn't meant to be funny.[8|]
  • Music is all I can manage on the exercise bikes at the gym, specifically 'Appetite for Destruction'.

I find the TVs too distracting. If I start to watch I stop concentrating and slow down.... dunno why that happens, I think I start daydreaming and forget that I'm supposed to be in pain. [:D]

As a little add on to this thread; I am thinking about setting up organised turbo sessions, aimed at triathletes, at the gym I work at. The idea would be that you could bring your own bike and turbo trainer and train as a group with some coaching rather than sit in your garage, shed or in my case dining room. I was wondering how many of you would use sessions such as this.

Well, just to show that great minds think alike, I have been meaning to post for a couple of days a suggestion that triathletes local to ech other might get together & 'group ride' on their turbos in some ones garage, or go spinning/studio cycling or use the leisure centre/gym option as mentioned by Boycie.

Personally I think it would only really be an idea if the session is coached. A group ride on the roads is a good thing, socially; but getting together so people can turbo in the same room would (I think) be defeated by the fact that everyone is working too hard to be able to chat!

    where are you all based?

I am in Birmingham, teach studio classes & would happily coach a session on turbos, I get to do all the talking..everyone else works!

Based around Watford, but don't hold it against me.

Hooray, weather forecasts here in Belgium says no turbo training in sight for first month.

Glad to ride on the real roads, but that only moves my question a month further I guess. [:D][8|]

Went out at the beginning of September and got do wet came home and immediately bought turbo.

    Hasn't rained since!

so much for that weather forecast[>:].

[>:]Pouring rain all day here in Belgium.

On the other hand, weather like this makes sure I don't have to work.

Did a easy turbo session, to recover from yesterdays excellent solo TT.

Took the laptop along, while my daughter is asleep. Didn't get bored, but only did a half hour.

Will let know if it works for the longer rides too, which will come back after the tri-season break![8D]

did an hour turbo session this morning.

Can anyone recommend any dvd's to take along in the garage.

Or maybe anyone knows of a good place to buy second hand or anyone wants to sell some of theirs?

Cause I suppose one gets bored watching the same ones for the whole time and needs to replace them with other ones.
