Tyre Dimensions explained.

I have found myself in the position of having to buy a new tube for my road bike. The problem is, since i was hoping to get it on-line i cannot seem to find the size i have now. This just makes me realize that i dont understand what the differences are and what 700x26c actually means. So what does each number mean, and basically can i use another size tube, or would i have to change my tyres aswell, or even my rims?!

    My very basic understanding is: the 700 refers to the wheel size, and all i know is 700=road bike, 26=one of those dirty mountain bike things, anything smaller is childs or a trailer. the next number refers to the width of the trye. from 20 up to 26 usual for road bikes, around 28 for hybrids. the "c" i have no idea. when you look at your old tube or the box it came in you should see a range of widths, usually 20-23, and 25-28.
