Foot pain whilst on the bike

Can anyone help me, I have seemed to have developed strange foot pain when cycling during a longish period of reduced training. it is predominantly in my right foot but today I had it in both feet. [:(]

It appears after about 15mins and is a bit like having extreme muscle fatigue along the outer edges of my feet (difficult to describe, but dull and really achy).

I am using Specialised bike shoes, yellow Shimano cleats and 105 pedals (but it also occurs with my Dura Ace pedals). I am not scrunching my toes up in the shoes and I am pretty sure the cleats are aligned correctly, plus I have a fair degree of float on the pedals/cleats.

I am sure that there was a thread about this about a year ago nut I cannot find it.....

Can anyone help with some advice???

Thanks

Iain.

  • Can't help with diagnosis but I would try: at this time of year make sure your feet are warm (thicker socks, overshoes etc), try altering your position (dropping/raising the saddle for example), maybe padded inserts (Specialized make some but they're not cheap). Basically I'd alter as much as possible before trying to buy a solution to a problem if you're not sure what it is.

I have had different foot pains over the last few years that were variously sorted out by warmth, position change and I do like my more padded inner soles compared with the original Sidi ones. Good luck.

You could try a few things to pin ppoint it. Get a lend of another pair of shoes and try them out, perhaps in a larger size. Also tinker with your set up bar height, stem length, and the one to start with seat post & saddle set up. Also have a trained eye watch you pedal in case you have a biomechanical quirk.

I had various foot problems which disappeared when I changed my shoes to Sidi

Check your shoes aren't too tight.

I'd agree with Rob but go one further - are your shoes wide enough? A couple of issues back someone wrote in with the exact same thing, and they were advised that their shoes were probably not wide enough. If I remember correctly there was a bit of an article on feet and the Q&A were really good. I have exactly the same thing, so I wear socks that are pretty thin (and boot covers in winter) and make sure that the straps on my shoes are really quite loose. Any pressure across the top of my foot will make this pain appear, be that in trainers, cycling shoes, or ice skates, in days gone by. Try reducing the pressure across the top of your foot and see if that helps.
  • Thanks all, I will try different socks/loosening straps before new purchases
