Pedals

JasonBJasonB Posts: 303
Hello all,

Just a quick question. When I bought my bike there were no pedals, so I put some cheapy ones on there.

Now I want to get some proper pedals. There are Shimano, look etc.etc.

If I were for example going to buy Shimano pedals, do I then only buy shimano shoes, and the same for look cleats. Do look cleats only fit with look shoes, or do the shoes come with clips that can fit on different designs of cleat?

As I remember it the correct cleats come with the pedal you buy rather than the shoe.

Does that mean though I need to buy the correct shoe to match the cleats? If so which are good?

    Jason,

I had the same dilemma. I've just bought some pedals and shoes from different websites, delivered today so I'll update tomorrow on just how compatable they are.

I bought the Shimano R540 pedals. The shoes are triathlon specific by Gaerne and from the Wiggle website. The product description stated that my shoes were 'compatable with most pedals/cleats'. Given that shimano are a major producer I've assumed they will fit. When the shoes actually arrived I could tell from the bottom that they are manufactured to fit a variety of different cleat systems so I'm confident they'll work but I guess there must be some shoes out there that will only work with certain systems.

As I said above, the pedals were only delivered today so I could be writing a dissappointed update tomorrow.

Most shoes are set up to take multiple cleat systems from different manufacturers, I'd be suprised if the shoes you bought were not compatible with the shimano cleats (especially as they are the biggest manufaturer of these things). I bought a pair of specialised road shoes and some shimano pedals which came with the correct cleats and they fitted the shoes perfectly. I'd guess you'll be fine.

    Success!

After abit of fiddling around with the cleats they fit the shoes. I just have to fit the pedals to the bike in time for Thursday's AM ride.

    Good luck with your search.

Jason, sorry never answered your question, I went for a pair of Specialised tri shows (should be able to find them on Wiggle) they have large quick release tab and a smaller adjuster to get the correct fit. On the heels they have loops ensuring you can grab them and get them on on the move. I bought the cheap Shimano pedals to go with them (got good reviews). As a whole the setup works like magic and my transitions are fast.

Now if I can sort out the three legs to be as fast....

Was that a pair of Trivent shoes Bonus at £99 or there abouts. They do get good reviews. However if you ride in cold weather you diffinately need over boots as your feet get very cold -- flip side your feet dry very quickly out of the pool due to the vents.

I got a pair diadora mtb shoes with time pedals & cleats ... not to everyones taste but you can run off the bike without even thinking about it & if you come a cross a grassed muddy run like i did leave them on after T2...good time (although would recommend socks if you intend to run in them). they also a little cold in winter but that minor

They are Trivents. And yes I can testify they are freezing cold in any weather above scorching hot (even in Lanzarote when I was there training on long rides my feet got cold). Other than that superb.
