Have a look at this article on bikeradar, which tries to quantify the benefit:

It suggests you will save approximately 10 Watts at 40 km/h (24.85 mph)

Aero helmets do work - they help shave seconds off time especially in 10 mile TT's. They are also good on Olympic distance tri's. In a longer event the aero advantage remains as long as you are prepared to remain in the aero position, if you are unable or not prepared to hold your position the aero helmet is of much less advantage. The thing to do for long events is to train with the helmet and all the kit in your aero position

Benny - a lot of people swear by the Giro aero helmets.

However when i was looking into helmets i went for the Limar Chrono. Its fully aero but has a shorter tail so is more forgiving when you move your head around?

  • I have to agree that the giro helmets are the dogs danglys, they are meant to be tight fitting so dont fret that it cuts the circulation off to your ears for a while, the helmet needs to be worn for a while in the comfort of ur own home or in the bath life i did (it made the wife laugh)

Also for the shoes, just got bought for me North wave carbon tribal shoes and have to confess they are superb !!!
