So, how many bikes do you own? How many do you need?

Hey Jack,

I have 3:-

New racing bike (Trek 1.7) for competiting & commuting

Old circa 1980's 12 speed Raleigh - which has my panniers for commuting, but it has just been promoted to my Turbo bike, if I ever set it up...

Old mountain bike - no suspension.. that's for girls....

The Wife jokingly suggested she would buy me a "proper" bike if I wanted to do the Ironman next year..

But Yes... I "apparently" already have too many bikes...

It seems to me that I can easily make the case for 4 bikes:

    1) Mountain bike for fun and hill/off road work

    2) Commute bike (something with mudguards, lights, panniers) that looks as though it's not worth nicking.

    3) Road Training/Touring bike.

    4) Race/TT bike.

Currently, I have an old Muddy Fox MTB (c. 1992) which I use for 1 and 2.

I've ordered a nice new bike which will, in season one, meet the needs for 3 and 4, but next year, if all goes well, will be replaced with a Cervelo P4 (or whatever it is).

I'll probably get a set of wheels so I can have training/race wheels. And a turbo (I'm really glad they've been invented, as I used to hate rollers).

I'm kind of interested in what the norm is, as I need data to present to the Missus to explain why the house is gradually turning in to a workshop - and the "upgrade" to a new bike doesn't mean that the old one goes in its place ;-).

So, how many bikes do you have? And how many do you need/want?
  • Hi

I have 2 at the moment.

    1. A Felt F5 road bike which I use for training and racing. I'm now going to add some tri bars to this after reading the thread below.

    2. An old British Eagle mountain bike which I use for going to the gym, shops and which I'm not worried about getting nicked.

This seems to be ok for now as I've only done a few triathlons (the Fast Twitch ones run by Concept Sport), however, the company I work for has just introduced the cycle to work scheme so I'm debating whether it is worth using the allowance to pick up an entry level tri bike of some description, not sure what I can get for £1000.

I could do with a back wheel for the turbo as I've shredded one tyre and changing the tyre every time for the special turbo ones is a pain in the a!se.

I currently have three bikes, my training/commuter/turbo bike which is a Dawes Giro 300, my race bike a Cervelo Dual Ultegra currently fitted with aero bars but I am hoping to convert to drop bars next week for this season as I have some hilly races planned and a full suspension mountain bike for playing around on. Not bad considering I live in a 1st floor flat I thought! Plus I fancy buying a single speed soon!

    Just the one for me!

Its a Viking torino! It isnt great but I love it. It looks the business for £254.

It has wheels and handle bars and even gears!!!! I dont comute as the road to work is a really busy one with loads of lorries and bad drivers and a bit narrow for an A road. I am thinking of upgrading to carbon forks soon which will take 2 kgs off the weight. (fam those steel blades)

I have three; a montain bike, winter bike and summer training/race bike.

I could easily justify another 4 bikes to myself, but justifying it to my wife would be another thing.

    I currently have 2

    1. Giant SCR 3 entry level bike fitted with SRAM Rival and Halo mercury wheels (NOT GOOD!)

    2. A standard Qunitana Roo Kilo 2008 TT bike - Love it!

I'd like a Carbon, I'm thinking of the Boardman or Dolan Mythos....

I've got two as well. Hybrid bike for commuting and a Kiron Scandium (which I love and its red!) for training/race bike.

When I bought the Kiron, the misses said "So you'll be selling your hybrid then?" Hah!

Bikes are my weakness.....cue Homer-like drool noise.

However I'm only allowed three at the moment:

1.Shiny new Bianchi Via Nirone Ultegra alu/carbon road bike (now set up with aero bars for racing)

2.Very old but much loved Giant Escaper MTB, with upgraded suspension fork and XT gears - this was my trusty commuting bike before I moved out of London and now does well for off-road riding.

    3. A sit-up-and-beg bike that gets me from the station to work and back in London. Looking to replace this with a Dahon on the cycle-to-work scheme.

My DH also has two bikes, so we currently have an entire room devoted to bikes. Madness.

    Wish list:

    A single-speed

    Full carbon road bike

Maybe a TT bike - depends on how many seasons of triathlon are left in me!

Only the MTB is red - so I'm clearly missing out.

  • One at the mo. Trek 1200 which I bought last year when I started tri. Hopefully should have new bike by this time next week. Am trying to justify why I need two bikes to the other half, whose simple answer is that I cannot ride both at once and therefore one should go.

Pah! And how many dresses/pairs of shoes/handbags/lipstick colours can she wear at once?

Currently I have two bikes: one in category 4, and one which might have been in category 4 sometime in the 1990s but has since been demoted to categories 2 & 3.

Is there any good reason why you can't fit your mudguards, lights &c on your training bike? Does anybody really believe they'll get lower-quality training just because they've got 5% extra weight or drag? If you've already got the bike and it's more of a "racer", then it might not have provision for some forms of luggage rack, but hey...

I reckon it should be easy enough to straddle categories 2 & 3. If your training bike currently looks clean & unscratched & attractive to thieves, there are two possible explanations:

    1. You're not training enough.

    2. You clean the bike regularly; you should spend some of that time training instead (see 1).

The answer has to be! Never show her both at the same time!

I have a Specialized Allez for training/racing and an Apollo mountain bike for hacking around the countryside. Love the MTB for a bit of variation.

1 mtb with slick tyres (actually was other halfs but my mtb has spot welded itself to the barn wall)

lusting after a road bike which I'm only allowed if I can find one for a VERY reasonable price

Ahh ...Bikes! I've only got 2, but I NEEED at least 2 more! ha!

I have a Specialized MTB. I keep 2 sets of tyres..one set of off road and one set of slicks, called specialized FATBOY (named after me..apparently!!). I use this for commuting and singletrack XC

I also have a Felt F75 which I love..Its fairly light at <19lbs. has carbon seat stay and folks and is comfy and good on hills.

And I have claimed stakes in bike number 9 at the gym's spin studio...

but they keep telling me its NOT MINE! ha ha!

Doctor says I need a Cervelo ps3 and a full susser MTB or I may die.

  • Being new to all this, I have 2. A road bike with mudguards basket on the front etc. and just got myself a new Giant racer.

Cervelo R3 SL, Cervelo P3C, Cervelo S1, Principa Rex e sx pro, Principa TT, Principa RSL, De Rosa Merak, Bianchi Pista (fixed wheel), Columbus SLX, Cannondale F500, Cannondale F4, Gary Fisher Tassajara.

you can never have too many bikes!

  • Giant SCR 3 upgraded with Mavic Aksium wheels, carbon seat post and Specialized Jet saddle for training on the road

Scott Contessa FX15 MTB for fun off road! I love this bike!

Just completed a bike build with the help of my husband who knows much more about bikes than I do! Planet X stealth Alu/carbon frame, Shimano ultegra SL, Profile design wing handlebars and aerobars, Dalkia six zero wheels-fantastic and worked out much cheaper than buying a similarly specced bike off the peg!

Ha, ha, ha. I was hanging off from replying to this thread until treefrog had listed his shed of bike porn for us all to enjoy. Nice one, matey!

    I have 3 bikes:

GT XC2 hardtail MTB which is as good as I am on the rough stuff (bought on cycle2work scheme).

Halfrauds Carrera Valour circa 2003 which has done me for aqbout a million training miles and loads of races.

Dolan Mythos (again, bought on cycle2work scheme) which has done too few training miles and will have a TT front-end and forward seat-post put on any week now.

In the crappy weather I've been using the old road bike for any real distances. For getting to the gym/shops/whatever I use the MTB. The Dolan comes out for the longest rides in the nicest weather and gets cleaned and oiled before being put away again.

Got 2, want 3. Currently have a very old Gary Fisher MTB for crapy weather and cycling to the gym, and a Specialized Transition for racing.

Hoping to use the fact that Mrs Squishy and I have got in to London-Brighton to buy an Allez-esque road bike for training and next winters turbo work.

    Have 2.5 bikes -

main bike is my Carrera Virtuoso - nice and cheap

2nd bike is a cheapo MTB with front suspension - used for town runs

2.5th bike is my 20 year old MTB that has a wobbly BB and the gear shifters don't work properly and has a shimano biopace chainset.

Will be getting rid of the 2.5th soon and within 12 months will have a proper bike ;)

Its not bikes I have a problem with though .... I have 4 cars at the moment - used to have 6 ... albeit not all in working condition, purchased mainly as projects.

This thread shows that I DEFINATELY need at least 2 more bikes. I only have one which is a giant hybrid which i use for commuting, training and will use for my first tri. I'l change the tires to slicks for that...

So I'm thinking that i will need another one to use for events, and probably another for training, then i can just commute on my hybrid.
  • if you cant be with the one you love, then love the one your with....

    giant ocr3 thingy (BLACK)

Mmm.. Treefrog's haul has awakened some ancestral memories. There were four of us in our family: We had a nice big extension put on the house, which was basically a work shop/bike store. We all had at least two bikes (my Dad probably had a few more, but as things got passed down, it is a bit hard to remember). We had a commute (cycle to school!) bike/hack bike, plus a racing bike each. We also had at least two tandems - one for touring, one for racing. So I think there were about, say, 9 or 10 bikes + 2 tandems. Then, in the shed, we had all the old junk bikes - kids bikes + shopper bikes...

This was in the days before mountain bikes had been invented... just things like fix wheel/track bikes, otherwise wise it was all road bikes.

One currently (see theiving gits thread) - a Raleigh hybrid. Just about to buy a new road bike, probably a Trek 1.5 or Boardman Comp.

Ideally I'd like an all carbon triathlon beast but I can't see that happening for a wee while.

I have been told if I want a tri bike, then the Chopper has to go......
  • BlinkybazBlinkybaz Posts: 1,144
Britspuin - I hope you mean a raleigh Chopper and not something else with a nick name like CHOPPER!!!!

That would beat leg-shaving as an act of sacrifice in the name of streamlining [:D]
