Why so much length

Hi Guys, I'm sure there is a really simple answer but I'll ask anyway....

My crank length is 175mm - what difference is there in a shorted crank - say the 170mm or 172mm???

Thanks for any help

    3-5cm.

Mean I know, obvious I also know, but why look a gift horse in the mouth.

However, I do believe that crank length can have huge implications on power generation, & is generally allied to leg length, long cranks with short legs = knee injuries.

I have bikes with cranks 175mm 170 and 165 and youd be hard pressed to notice ANY difference at all!! That said it can afect ground clearence when going for it round corners!! I originaly had 175 on my race bike but changed these to 170mm (there was a sale on and these were last ones!!) and didnt notice any change to power at all, that said I did move my saddle down 5mm to compensate.
