Hi will, without knowing wha tthe physio/doc said it is hard to comment but i had similar symptoms with my knee when i was younger (playing football) it turned out that due to an old ankle injury, my gait had caused my muscles in one side of my thigh to atrophy and the otherside to pick up the slack. This caused my kneecap to become slightly out of alignment and caused dull aches and a crack/clicking sound when i flexed my knee. This was sorted by getting specific excercises to rebalance the muscles, new trainers to sort the gait and some patience. it might be the case that your injury has dome something similar? But i would suggest that you follow the physio and do what you were recommended.
if you want pm me and i will try and explain the exercises i did
Fingers crossed for you!

Been running for a few years (10k's) - just training for my first sprint at Stratford-on-Avon in May and picked up a knee injury (in my first run this year) that initially meant i couldn't run - so just concentrated on bike/swim but now down to just swimming!! (if it was called an 'athlon... i'd be ok!! It's the "tri" i've got a problem with!! [:)]).
Was hoping that someone out there might have some advice/knowledge/exercises/anything that they could help....
Problem:
[ol][*]dullish pain behind knee cap (gets worse after 12/13 miles of riding)
[*]noise/clicking when i bend it.
[*]No swelling[/ol]
Tried:
[ol][*]Rest/ice.
[*]Physio - he gave me hamstring/quad stretches and have been doing squats like crazy. Got a smaller thigh circumference in the bad knee than the good. Tried a weights machine to strengthen quads but just gave more pain behind knee
[*]Sympathetic doctor referred me to a knee specialist (but this could take months)[/ol]
Wan't to try and do anything that may help it heal quicker/strengthen/prevent happening in the future. Looks like i'm postponing the tri until Stratford's Sept one.....
Has anyone got any help for a severely p'd off first timer.
Thanks,
Will.
knees can take for ever if you play on them without getting a decent diagnosis - this is a case of do as I say not as I did - try asking your doc to try and speed referral through or shock horror can you afford at least a private consultation with the consultant he/she has referred you to - you can then go back on the health after
Tried a physio late Jan - being doing his exercises for what seems like for ever. Might try see a different one!
Missus is far from impressed - just bought a nice new bike and now can't ride it...far!
Cheadle a bit far - in Watford. Thanks though!
i feel for you man, i too have knee trouble, on and off, its a real pain in the ar$e!
I have never been one for all that 'strengthening' type exercises on the gym mat, sure i've done the weights thing, but not that hairy-fairy (tongue in cheek) type stuff in front of a mirror! Since being completely taken over by TRI, i no longer feel that way about anything, i don't care (even .01%) about how the tri-suit looks, or about doing the hairy-fairy stuff in front of the mirror. I'll do whatever it takes to be the best i can be. Anything goes (as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else!).
Anyway, i've decided that i probably need to do LOTS more 'strengthening' type exercises and am currently looking for a good book that will show me how. I hope it will go some way to reduce the crappy knee issues!
Can anyone suggest a good book?
Probably over did the exercises a bit with it last night. Working on Glutes/Adductors for hip strength. It was twinging a bit, I have to admit.
The only positive I can say about the knee injury is that it has forced me to really knuckle down with the swimming. Managing to do lengths of FC quite comfortably now. But I smell of chlorine permanently.
I had an ACL reconstruction two years ago after years of getting by with knee problems. I went through all the strength excersises, proprioception stuff, loads of stretching etc yet still had problems. Finally got the doc to refer me to a knee specialist and (finally after a 3 month wait) went for an MRI to find I didn't have much of an ACL left. Sorry, waffling on... Anyway, best advice I can give is, if the physio isn't working, go and see a specialist as soon as you can. Having the op was the best thing I did even though the rehab was hard going it allowed me to take up triathlon and excercise properly after years of set backs.
There is light at the end of the tunnel then Rocksteady [:)]...
Good luck ginger!
Am I alone in loving the smell of chlorine??
Nope. My cats go completely crazy for it. They will actually stoop so low as to nuzzle the swimming costume and drool. There's clearly something in it that makes cats high.

Not sure what that says about me!!
