First times, not always a good thing!

The past few weeks I have experienced many things for the 1st time, and I don't like it!

A few weeks ago I had my first puncture since I started riding a road bike, but I got 2! with only 1 inner tube with me there was much walking involved!

A few days ago I experienced mechanical failure whilst out on the bike, I think my freehub is knacked (pawls not engaging properly, My plan is to get some tools and switch the 8spd cassette off that bike only the training wheels from the 10spd bike, I hope it works, I can't really afford a new hub/wheel)

Either way I was stranded 6 miles out of lincoln, and apparently according to the tw*t of a bus driver bikes arent allowed on buses! Queue some more walking!

Then today (with a partially patched up bike) I went out to do some hill training, and fell off for the 1st time ever! and did some tarmac surfing in the middle of lincoln!

I don't like 1st times :(

I got cramp in my calf for the 1st time during an RPM session last year (I'm 27 so that's not bad going...). I've discovered that i am not a big fan of cramp...

I love the no bikes on public transport rule. You can take your hairy slobbering dog & have it take a seat up, you can block the aisles with prams, kids, shopping trolleys, legs, feet etc, you can't smoke (hooray)...unless its very smelly weed, you can have VERY personal conversations out very loud on your phone, you can blast your MP3 player or play tinny rubbish out loud via your mobile phone, but you can't bring that bike on here....
  • First time (since childhood) i have a cough that wont let me sleep [:@]

Fortunately due to skating i am a concrete surfing specialist, even holding the scottish record for longest top of head sliding into a moving bike time.

@Tommi - same thing happened to me last Saturday. An unpatchable puncture and the valve snapping on my spare tube meant a 5 mile walk home in my SPDs. I got the whole "we're not allowed bikes on here" spiel from the bus driver - a whole 3 other people on the entire single decker!

The positive I tried to take from it was: it was a lovely sunny day, and I got a bit of a tan on my walk.

Two punctures is an arse! I carry one spare tube, can't get two in the saddlebag.

I always take my phone and money too, and I'd hope to be able to get a taxi. Or phone the wife!

sometimes first times are great; this weekend it was the first time I rode over 82 k with my bike, added 30k to that, so 112k. That included riding up the Monteberg and Kemmelberg(20% gradient steepest part!) for the first time ever.

Haven't ever fallen off my bike (as an adult) unless getting knocked off by a car counts. I also have never had two punctures in a single ride. There is a reason for this: as a devouted follower of the Unholy Laws of Sod I know that simply by carrying a spare tube AND a puncture repair kit I will never get two punctures*.

*Unless I say 'I will never get two punctures', in which case I am guaranteed to have at least 5 on my next ride.

A repair kit is a great back-up. Takes up no space, is light, can fix about a dozen punctures. A great accompaniment to the spare tube.

Acouple of Sundays ago i did a 40 k bike followed by a 10 k run brick session for the first time, but could only manage 5k because i got horrendous cramp in my thighs,so a bit more electrolyte drink for me in future. But today i did my first length of 33 metre pool swimming front crawl YIPPEE

One his first tri a work colleague took the wrong exit off the last roundabout on the bike, despite the presence of signs and marshalls. He went about a mile before realising, so a two mile detour in all.

Well I remember my first puncture, was about 5 miles from the nearest town, had no punc kit or spare tube with me. I only realised I had forgot about detaching the saddle bag a few nights before....

had to walk into town then only to realise I had no money or phone....... a nice kind old lady gave me £3 for the bus fare home which I was deeply grateful for.... there are decent folk out there afterall

I also recall getting my nice keo clipless pedals and thought I'll try these boys out and then didn't even get out the garden path and fell over into my garden. Looked like a total prat.... but you learn from the mistakes!!
