Hmmm... see what you mean, conehead. We need something like the yanks use i.e 'Clydesdale' when they mean 'Middle aged mid-life crisis fat git' or 'Amazon' when they actually mean 'Clydesdale's ex-wife'.

If 'Novice' doesn't cover it and maybe 'Fun' is too soft, what about a 'Finishers' wave? Or an 'Experience' wave.

    ummm...

    'Newbies'?

    'Non-Competitive'?

    'Self-Targetted'?

'Improvers'? - I like that one.

    'Help me, I'm drowning!'?

    how about

    eye opener

    preathlete

  • Seems quite adaptable to English language as well as Triathlon game
  • how about:-

beginner, learner, newcomer, new member, new recruit, initiate, tyro, fledgling, apprentice, trainee, probationer, student, mentee

and in a slightly random way (if Tri was a religion, it is isn't it?? and doing yor first event is like being Ordained)

    Novitiate, Postulant, Proselyte, Catechumen, Neophyte

sorry some of these were probably mention above..

Surely if you're not a novice, you're an improver? Or have I just got the wrong end of the stick here?

Going down the American route, how about:

    Rookie

    Freshman

    or:

    Fledgling

    Or an acronym:

NEWTTASS - New To This And Shit Scared

    I quite like 'padouin'

Casual? Covers new people and those not serious enough to risk the full aqua-ruck in search of a podium finish.

Cut the names and go for something similar to cycling based on a sprint distance tri.

4th cat:for first triathlon and times between 1hr 45m and over.

    3rd cat: for times between 1hr 30 and 1hr 44m59s

    2nd cat: for times between 1hr 15 and 1hr 29m59s

    1st cat:for times under 1hr 15.

or am I talking garbage as usual.

'Coneheads Wave' linked to 'Coneheads Training Day' All triathletes get to be honorary Coneheads on completion, and a t-shirt with your picture on...

Greenhorn sounds too american & a tad condescending.

I like the Rookie. Good film too.
  • How about "Cruiser". As you're looking at those who may want to just "cruise" round on breastroke/MTB/jog
  • Cheryl6162Cheryl6162 Posts: 356
mmmmm....think cruiser sounds a bit like something you might get arrested for in a red light area! But maybe the same could be said of greenhorn!

    How about Coneheads Cronies??

... and a signed copy of his book of course!

Did you all know Conehead had written a book incidentally? Its jolly good...

    ;-)

  • What about "Triers" or "Tryers", not sure which is best spelling!

    Maybe that should be "Trying"
  • rookie is cool but it sounds the same as novice in terms of who it woud attract. if you're looking to attract people who might be in their second or third tri season but woul dprefer to take it easier and do breaststroke etc and just get round then I quite liked 'finishers' that was mentioned above. it's not got the 'novice' ring to it....x
  • Jack HughesJack Hughes Posts: 1,262
    I think I prefer "beginners".

  • still thinking 'beginners' is a bit too 'newbie/novice' exclusive. theres loads of folk out there do tris year after year just for the finish and never really hold any expectation or desire to win or get a good age group position... do you reckon??
  • sfullersfuller Posts: 628
Just use both of these ideas and why not 'Rookie Triers'.....
