Oulton Park Duathlon - 19 April

The one in October wasn't too early if I recall rightly. It's a mass start, not a time trial so no need to start at horrible o'clock to get everyone through. I think probably 10 or 10.30 last time.

I'll be there, I'm looking forward to it. By coincidence I was checking this myself this lunchtime. My confirmation email says the race pack will be sent not less than a week before. As it's Easter this weekend I'm hoping this means it will arrive tomorrow or on Thursday.

Yeah.. I was kind of hoping it would come soon... as there are only 6 working days to go!

I've just been putting together my last list of essentials from Wiggle. Will be my first bike race since 1978 or 1979 I think.

I'm looking forward to the experience - don't have the fitness I would like though, but I thought I would take the plunge.

The fact that is a closed circuit, and a non-standard distance, appealed! (less chance of being crushed by a car, not too long a walk in case of break down, and no pressure to set PBs). Looked ideal for a nice starting point.

OK, I'm getting antsy waiting for the race pack to arrive...

I'm trying to plan my logistics. It's about 1.5 hours drive away, and I'm trying to work out if I need to stay overnight... Which means finding somewhere to stay, deciding if the family are coming or not etc. etc.

All depends on the start time, and when bikes have to be racked etc. A 10am or later start and I will definitely toddle over on the day. Anything earlier...

Now, there is nothing that I can see on the web site that gives a clue to the start time - I my have over looked it of course (even looked at the race reports for last years events).

    Anybody have any clues?

Hussler, looking at your Argon on the Bike Porn thread I assume you will be round a wee bit quicker than me. [:D]

My first goal of the season is to finish the first run lap before a bike laps me. Nearly manged it last time!

Well, if you're prepared to hang around long enough after you've finished, I'll say hello for sure. Assuming I can still breathe!

Yeh I tend to hang around and cheer everyone else on once I have finished:)

I havent seen any race pack yet......

No pack for me yet - but not been home to inspect the post. And the missus left before the post came this morning.

Start time is 10am..... obviously we need to be there well before for the race brief/set transition up etc....

Im gona get there about 0800-0830 so I can get it all sorted and chill out before the mayhem starts!

    Check this link out.... http://www.mapmyride.com/run/united-kingdom/little-budworth/433479339

It is the half marathon run route but it gives you a slight indication that the main hills are between 1.5 miles and 1.75miles and 2-2.5miles per lap...

It doesnt look too steep either only 2% so the link says..... the rest is flat or slightly downhill...... only time will tell if this is right!!!lol

Still not got my event pack. Tsk. Knee really playing up. My head tells me I won't be fit. I certainly won't be able to do any more training - so a recovery week is now the prospect.

Off to look for a way of transporting Bike, Dog and Missus - as, if I do compete, I will need a back up crew, as I probably won't be fit enough to drive afterwards.

I havent received any pack up yet either Im not sure we will get anything as everything apart from the Transition diagrams are now available to download on the site.....

Just rest this week with a few little efforts on the turbo/bike and maybe an easy run during the week

Got my email. I forgot they only send you an email, you get your number on the day. I'm going to get there about 9.

The race is over the full course lap so 2.692 miles run, 16.152 miles bike, 2.692 run.

There's one up"hill" to speak of. You start off and go fairly gradually downhill to a straight that ends in a hairpin. Then it undulates a bit until you get to the hill, then flat pretty much back to the start/finish line.

Just out of interest, do you guys have a target time in mind? Last year I managed (a rather slow) 1.47.something which I'm expecting to slice a considerable chunk off, due to having done more training and having a proper bike this time.

I have my race pack up now!

    Im number 101 I think??

Im aiming for sub 1hr 15mins... Im guessing with it being flatish, Ill do the first run in around 17 mins, bike in anything around 35-38 mins and 2nd run around 18 mins plus a minute in each transition...

But who knows what will happen on the day. I am aiming for top 10 Overall and top 3 Age group....

looks like entry is still open? Is that right?
  • husslerhussler Posts: 237
Dont think so mate..... Although I have just clicked on the enter event button and it still says you can enter.... try it and get entered mate!
  • husslerhussler Posts: 237
If you read the event closer date it says 24th April 2009

SOooooo in theory you can still enter the race after it has actually finished haha

Enter it gaz!! then if they try and palm you off saying you are too late state that it says the closing date is the 24th!! they will have to let you in then haha:)
  • Jack HughesJack Hughes Posts: 1,262
Probably not - the web site says 24/4/09 - which is plainly silly. But now they have published all the lists of starters etc it is probably too late.

  • JulesJules Posts: 987
The website looks like it will still take entries. They only email stuff to you, no need to wait for the post, so they may well still accept you Only 106 entered, last spring it was over 170, another reason for them to keep entries open.

    very tempted..........

    DO IT!!!!!!!!

just had a meeting with the boss (the wife), she has talked me out of it.

    Meeting minutes:

£33 entry fee - frowned upon

    "Cheshire, where's cheshire?"

Brings forward to need to get some tri-cycle shoes - more expense

Risk of upsetting my first tri training

    Action:

Don't enter the race, use the 'saved' £33 to go towards some tri-cycle shoes.

    [:'(]

    Lol...

It wont affect your Tri training at all mate!

It gives you more practice at Transitions and it will improve your run legs off the bike :) plus with running first your legs will have to get used to cycling once your on the bike. It doesnt matter which way around you do the run/bike bit in training your body to get used to feeling rubbish! Either way you still get Jelly legs :) Plus you will know how you will feel in your first Tri.....

Plus its only around 40 mins from you!

The way my knee is looking, you can have my entry.. dunno if you're allowed to transfer... It might be a bit suspicious if you stormed the V45 category [;)]

But I think I will be spectating
  • husslerhussler Posts: 237
    You can try!

I think what they do in these cases of withdrawls id give you a race credit so youll be able to enter the one in October or another one of their races without paying.

Try it though, you never know!

If Jack isnt a BTA member then surely you two could fudge the entry as you usually dont need to show any ID if your not a member??

or Work on an idea for getting around the excessive WAT rates currently being issued........
  • JulesJules Posts: 987
I saw you go past me Hussler - number 101, Argon bike! On my 4th bike lap I think.

I finished in 1.31, very pleased. I have a sore calf though.

Just got home from racing this event....

Brilliant event, well organised, no problems with any aspect of it!!

Highly recommended for anyone who fancies doing a late season race in October!!!

I managed to finish 3rd Overall and win my age group 25-29.

Splits as follows: from my garmin...

    4.5k run 15:19

    T1 00:37

    25k Bike 40:42

    T2 00:26

    4.5k run 16:04

    Total 1:13:08...

Im chuffed with that as its my first race this year, certainly blew some cobwebs off! lol

After starting the run in the front group, after around 500m I looked at my Garmin and we were running at 4:51 per mile..... I then decided to let this group go as I certainly wouldnt have finished 3rd if I had carried on! averaged 5:38 per mile on first run so well happy:)

The guy who set this pace out the blocks only lasted about 300m more than me at this pace then we all overtook him and I managed to lap him on the bike....One lesson learned..... Pace yourself! lol

Get signed up for the Autumn race!!!

Top effort that - I am insanely jealous [:D]

I need to do some hill work on the bike. Not that the hill was much of one but every bike lap number 8 came past me on the hill and every lap I went past him again on the flat.

    Well done. Very well done.

I expect the conditions were pretty good too - not too much headwind?
