Wetsuits

I notice on the London Tri site they have Orca speedsuits for hire for the whole year at 50quid

Is this a decent deal? is it worth buying one regardless

I plan to do 2 triathlons this year one sprint and one olympic (london) - then more next year...

  • If you intend doing any open water training then you are best to purchase a suit. You can pick up 2004 models for very reasonable money at http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk or good old www.ebay.co.uk
  • nice one cheers...I noticed some of James Cycles (and else where since I posted) are only 50quid more than the hire cost

    Loonytoon,

Tri UK in Yeovil hire for £35.49 (including postage) for the year (+£100 refundable deposit). They also sell ex hire suits. They have a website, check it out:

    http://www.triuk.com/

If you ever get a chance to go there you'll be like a kid in a sweet shop. I picked up my wetsuit in the sales there for 50% off. They were very helpful.

    Cheers

I've noticed on few of these sites they also advertise "body glide" any good?

try using ky jelly instead. it's cheaper if you can get over the embarassment of buying it! no vaseline though, as it's pretroleum based, and apparently will rot your suit.

some on the back of your neck to stop the suit rubbing, and some on your wrists and ankles to help you get the suit off quickly. on the outside too, so it slips over your heels as it turns inside-out.

if you're going to buy a suit make sure you try it on first. it's important to get one that fits properly.

    happy lubing!
  • I nearly put "...or is KY Jelly better?" but was worried the that my question would be twisted [:D]

Tri UK are good if you are down near Yoevil. When I was there getting a wetsuit, they had a pool to try it out. Some of the open water venues also give you the opportunity to try wetsuits before you buy/hire.

i got a hammerhead wetsuit from ebay for £24 brand new...i know its not the best quality but its a perfect fit (the guy i bought it off sells a lot on his ebay shop and has an accurate sizing chart...also a good returns policy if its not right).... so it cant be grumbled at....if i turn pro i'll buy a more expensive one.

he's loads to choose from and i can reccommend him

ref: james cycles have suits for only £50 more than you can hire them, unless suits have gone up immensely (due to the pound shifting)you should be able to buy an entry level wetsuit fairly easily for £100 anyway.

    e.g. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/triathlon/10/Orca_S2_Wetsuit/5360041584/

ref: triuk : the refunfable deposit is actually you "buying" the wetsuit. You get the refund if you return it, without (their decision) scratches, holes, marks etc. That said, the HQ1 rent appears to be a total of £75 inc deposit at the moment, and that wetsuit doesn;t appear to be on sale so maybe their rental business model has changed this year? The endless pool for trying the suit out in was (last year) only available if you were BUYING not "RENTING". A very decent bunch there though - I don't mean to sound negative.

I was a little confused when I received my Wetsuit from Tri Uk - I thought I was getting their cheapest of the cheap ones on hire - but the one I received was the £169 one I think (unless they have changed the design)- cost £70 plus £15 delivery and you have the option to keep it in September or return it at your cost and get £50 back.
