front crawl advice

having now hit the heady heights of being able to do front crawl without drowning and stringing 40+ lengths (3 weeks[:D]) together I'm now wanting to get some technique sorted

[ol][*]breath every 2 strokes - is this OK to stick to? barr the lengths where been racing the 'nemesis' his idea not mine where I actualy manged every 4 without feeling like I was air starved - apparently I'm going faster than I look

[*]trying to do every 3 in anticipation of my favoured side being straight into a wave once do OW BUT on my non learnt side (right) I start to sink and feel like I'm back a square 1

[*]noticed that as I rotate whole body to do my breath on my favoured side my right arm is already starting back before my left has even started hitting the water, I can do the leave left out and right just about touches it before left goes back but can't leave right out when turning to breath - can do lying on left side and swim lengths just lobbing in the rotating to breath messes it up

[*]not convinced that getting as much power out of arms as should- taught the idea that should be saluting and stretching out keeping elbow high but conscious that what I then do with said arms is a bit of a mystery - left arm does bend at elbow and pulls back to thigh doing a half a fig 8 shape, think it crosses mid line BUT right does this straight back to thigh - have a feeling this is linked to breathing every 2 strokes[/ol]

sorry its a bit muddled never thought I'd be asking about technique as have been concentrating on just managing a vaguely front crawl stroke[:)]

Two links to be getting on with, They are both of Grant Hacket, a supreme front crawl swimmer (does 1500m in about 14 minutes!!!!!!) Have a look at his rotation and catch and pull elements. See how he glides the stroke momenteraly and think about this the next time you hit the pool..........

moonshine, those are really good questions and it sounds like you're thinking about all the right things (or the same things that i am)! I'm looking forward to getting some good advice on Sunday :)

Don't know if this is any use or whether its just going to confuse things further but I was told to execute the elusive 'catch' as if you're reaching over a barrel.

Have a look through this as well, page 2 shows a good drill for executing the elusive 'catch'.

    and more drills

But do try and get some coaching, even if its just one or two lessons. Its easy to get the drills wrong and practice bad habits. I'm sure the cone-headed one will sort you out on Sunday.
