Depends on the doctor, my doctor is keen on his sports so told me who would be the best person to see when I was having all my knee troubles and I got an appointment pretty quick. Best of luck though!

Sorry to say it but Jon is right. My story (cue violins) was 6 weeks from GP to physio, 2 months of arguing about where the pain was, back to GP who knew nothing, off to find new GP, 6 weeks for sports specialist, 1 month to bone scan, 1 month to result, 1 month to MRI, 1 month to result, verdict= stress fracture which I implied to the physio 6 months before.

Hopefully you get a GP who actually does sport or something about sport's related injuries.

What did they say? I don't watch soap operas and I feel like the tale of Gary's shins is the next best thing!

I think G. meant that he had got back from a run. The appointment is on Thursday. You need to set your alarm to that, so you can tune in to the next thrilling installment!!!

Gary, I was reading an old issure of Triathletes world (shock horror!!) and spotted a little blurb on shin splints and related injuries. So of course I thought of your current problem and thought I'd let you know. One thing they said that could be quite important, and which your doc or physio probably wouldnt be able to help you with, is whether you are wearing the correct shoes. So this is where they said proper gait analysis is really important. They also recommended standing calf raises for strengthening and stretching the calves and related areas. Thought you might be interested. Hope you get back on the road soon!

    thanks Bman

I have been to the world famous Bourne Sports in Stoke to get my gait analysis done, and yes, i walked out with a new pair of nikes for me and the WAT officer!

As for the calf raises, i'm all over it! I will be doing them every day twice a day from now on (you never know).

I'll be in the quacks on Thursday now as down south tonight, we'll see what he says.

Does anyone recommend a hot bath? (Very hot bath)......

Got a referral to a sports physio at Lilleshall National Sports Centre - a well known centre of excellence for loads of different sports :)

I have an appointment for next Friday :)

Do i run in the mean time, so it is still a little tender and therefore i a) don't feel like a fraud and b) can tell him where it hurts?

Or just lay off running all together.

    Just a note:

The appointment is on Friday, I have Conehead's 2nd training day the next day, and my third Sprint tri the day after that..,...,....

Did the Doc just refer,or express an idea of what might be wrong?

Rest,it is better to do too little than too much and exasparate the injury,go swimming, and light cycle work, should keep the body ticking over, and your not going to lose that much fitness in a week. All the best.

Pah! The world smiles on you.

    Injury 11th April.

    GP 14th April

Back to the GP 17th - and get a referral.

Lots of hoo-haa with the Insurance (Nasty Norwich Union Rubbish Scheme will look for another).

[OK, Fully booked out in April, May and Most of June with work].

First visit with specialist (who charges more than the Insurance scheme "normally" pays") on 9th June.

    That's almost 2 months.

I've done nothing with it since 11th - except gain weight and loose muscle, with a bit of swimming.

And it still hurts. Took the dog for his longest walk yet as he was 8 months old (he is rationed to 5 minutes per month until he gets a bit older). The walk aggravated the injury just enough so the pain when I turned over woke me up at night. So I'm not too worried that it will have all healed up by the time I get to the specialist.

[I've looked at other options as suggested on the Forum - but the effort of trying to organise things was just too hard. For now.]

In case any one is interested, this is the specialist that I am off to see in a few weeks time.

Jack, are you using a walking stick to take the pressure off the knee, the dog will appreciate a longer walk,I'm sure, instead of mugging the Guide dog donation tin.

Poor Mungo - only 5 minutes walk per month?!? He can come live with me and I'll take him every day [:D][:D][:D]

I have been to the physio!

I have 'medial tibial stress syndrome'.....or the most commonly suffered condition (albeit one of about a dozen) often referred to as shin splints.

Anyway, we're going to work on strengthening my hips.......no running until further notice, just lots of exercised with a very large elastic band!

So that's it, no triathlons for a while, but i will hammer that bike and pool. HAMMER then!

    Good Evening!

Gary, don't worry about missing out on the running.Cycling and swimming will keep your fitness levels up,and any time lost through not running will be made up through time gains in the other two, crystal ball says 4 weeks you will be competing again.
