I wanna overlay something over the laminate in my living room to stop my weights leaving an imprint on the floor. I was thinking a large piece of wood with some underlay (mats or actual underlay although im afraid that may rip).
Whats the best thing to use for the wood? chipboard? ply wood?

Use the matting used for camping- a foam roll mat.
You can get them for about £8 - soft, they roll up and are perfect for what you want.

I'd say ply, 12mm
any thinner it will Warp and not lie flat, 18mm is a heavy sheet for moving around. If you not going to be moving it around then go for 18mm.
deff go for ply, chip board is cheaper and warps easier, ply looks better too.
cheers
