220 Bike Buyers Guide - b'twin sport 2

I have been competing for the last couple of years on my mountain bike and looking to upgrade now to a road bike - but on a budget. This months magazine (July 09) is recommending the b'twin sport 2 at the £500 level. Has anyone bought this bike and would you recommend it? I would like to hear anyone's thoughts - good or bad.

Or does anyone else have any other recommendations for this price level? I have seen a range from Claude Butler, the same model as my mountain bike - does anyone have any thoughts on these as well?

Many thanks.

I'd go with a specialised ALez for £550.

I have just upgraded my mountain bike about 3 weeks ago and got a trek 1.2 for £550 I’m no expert on road bikes but I’m very happy with it. The guys in the LBS said the specialized was not as good as the trek.

I could only take their word for it.

Hi Mate, i got a claud butler urban 300...it was last years model and i picked it up for £300, i've put some new tyres on it instead of city grippers (which seemed prone to punctures at the slightest hint of rough riding) and its going great. i'm using it for my first ever tri next weekend.

of course i'd love a carbon race or tt bike but i just cant afford that (and if i had 5 grand to spare i'd trade in my fireblade for a new R1 anyway) so i got a hybrid bike so i can do both distance training and have a rough blast down some trails from time to time. I have to admit i'm really pleased with it and i expect it to last me a good year or two worth of sprints (my first is only supersprint) so i think it was a good buy.

there seems a real snobbery about bikes in this world but go for what suits you...it will feel better than your MB anyway so improvement is all you'll see

let us know what you go for mate

i bought a claud butler san remo 2008, stuck new wheels, tyre, tri bars, saddle, brakes, pedals... hate the bloody thing. Its too heavy. I bought the bike for £350 and with all those additions I could've bought a much better bike.

What I'm trying to say is that you go for the bike that suits you and you like. So if its £100 or £200 over budget then it will be worth as you'll be less likely to add to it for a while. The cheaper the bike, the more you want to upgrade. Trust me I'm trying to persuade WAT office to loosen the purse strings for a new TT
