Not happy......

Was happily commuting to work today going through Eltham (SE London). I was in the bus/cycle lane doing about 25mph(ish) when some twat overtakes me and cuts infront to turn down a side road.....needles to say carnage followed I hit his car and went from 25mph to 0mph in 3cm over the top of his car and onto the tarmac.........tarmac is very unforgiving

He stopped (very appologetic) called ambulance and police etc..... Ive got a lovely load of bruises and grazes (thanfully no breaks etc).

BUT!!!!

My lovely Focus Cayo is FOOKED!! the top tube just snapped clean in half such was the impact

Thing that pee'd me off was I usually commute using my fixie but thought I'd take the Cayo out for a ride instead..........bloody sods law!!

Am now pursuing an insurance claim, guess all the rest of my races will be done on my fixed wheel (have to put a freehub on it I think)

Hey-ho couldve been worse I suppose...............nice new forum by the way!!

    MG,

Thats terrible, but the good thing is your ok. It could've been worse. At least your still able to compete this year and you've not broken anything...

The forum's getting better, still has some flaws though

Gutted mate - sorry to hear that. That's pretty feckin awful. As someone who tries to avoid cycling in London as much as possible, I can picture the scene all too clearly. Only thing to look forward to is a brand new bike, but no consolation.

I reckon we should step up the campaign to take the fight back to rubbish, stoopid and myopic drivers - how about we start lobbying the mayor to let us carry stun guns, pepper spray and the like? He's supposed to be pro-cyclist isn't he??

Gutted for you MG but as you say could have been a helluva lot worse! Can't believe you didn't break anything (apart from the bike... my condolences). Hope you heal up quickly and I'm going to be extra cautious cycling home tonight (east London). I'll bet the driver was bricking it as he probably thought he'd killed you!

Hope the insurance comes through quickly and painlessly... Going for the same bike again?

You must be gutted, but bloody lucky that you didn't injure yourself more seriously. Think we should all have a moments silence for the loss of the Cayo.

i'm really soprry to hear that, but very glad you aren't too badly hurt. I have to say i think that the warm weather brings the morons out. this week riding from SE London (Greenwich) to mayfair i have almost been hit at least twice as many times as normal, and there have been lots more near misses that i have seen. I don't want to think how bad it would be if the weather stays like this for a long time. But then i would get lots more training in of an evening...

So what bike are you looking at for a replacement?
  • what a tube....atleast he stopped...most of the nuts out there wouldnt give you that courtesy..

    hope your better soon

oucheroo, glad to see you are ok, although the loss of the cayo should constitute compassionate leave from your employer (it is sunny after all)

let's hope the insurance coughs up some and fast, the driver deserves the reminder not to do it again every time he renews his policy.
  • sorry to hear that .. I've noticed the London drivers getting a bit whacky in the congested heat (more than usual), especially when pulling out they want to edge their way into road to make someone stop but will do it right in front of you on the bike and just expect you to stop within about 10m .. i always have to dangerously swerve into traffic to get round the front of them to avoid joining them in the drivers seat.

*flag at half mast for your bike*

Not much too add, other than sympathy, but:

Firstly, I am so glad you are around to tell the tale, regardless of the damage to bike.

Second, I hope the insurance goes OK and you can get something good out of it.

Third, I hope your confidence isn't dented. The exact same thing happened to me - but I was going uphill, so wasn't going so fast, and was able to bunny hop out of the way onto the pavement. It was a close thing. I did a risk assessment, and decided that commuting through the streets of Bradford was just too dangerous, and switched to running in the 8 miles instead.

i heard over lunch that the wife had an off on the way to work, on my airnimal joey.

she said the bike was fine but the rear tyre was pnuctured, frame ok, wheel ok then some waffle about her hand hurting blah leg something blah

    Sounds horrible, glad you're OK.

    Think of the new bike!

thats sucks ass! but like everyones said, you've just got bruises (you could add them to cheryl62 injury porn forum page (or was that on the old forum pages?))

Sorry to hear that mate, I hope you recover quickly and the insurance company don't mess you about. I ride in to the City from Woolwich and have reverted to running in as the drivers seem to be getting worse, especially around Greenwich - I nearly got knocked off 4 times in two days.

Hopefully in a couple of weeks you'll look back and think at least I got a new bike out of it

As with the others, you have walked away from this so that is most important thing.

Second, I presume that the claim will extend to the cost of the Cayo's replacement. You probably lost the invoice but can show that the cost of a replacement Focus Cayo SRAM Expert is £1,799.99

No sooner had I put a post up complaining about the drivers in that area and how I'd decided to run in from now on...

Woke up late this morning and thought oh bugger it I will have to ride in, only to be totally wiped out along Woolwich Road. If the guy behind me on a MTB is a member of this forum I would like to thank him for stopping and offering me his water. The short version of what happened was that I was cycling along in the cycle lane and a car coming from the opposite direction turned into the side road to my left (their right) and BANG. I dont really remember what happened next other than the MTB rider talking to me as I lie in the road.

Just got back from A&E where they said I had no broken bones, which is good but the bike is a write off. Happy Friday!!!

    NO WAY!

You lived to tell the tale though, glad to hear you've not done any serious damage to yourself.

Did the guy who hit you stop? Can you claim on his insurance? Can you go round his house and beat the living crap out of him?
  • gdh250467gdh250467 Posts: 237
Can we all go round there a beat the living crap out of him string him up by his nads on public display, the revolution begins!
  • md6md6 Posts: 969
God that's not good, glad you've nothing broken and good to see that there was someone who stopped for you. it's quite worrying as i ride through from Greenwich 3 day/week but i try and go at 7 so i don't see so many deaf, dumb, blind, ignorant homicidal drivers... I will also be reverting back to my hybrid from now on, as nice as my lovely race bike is - commuting is best done on the near bomb proof hybrid.

P.S if you're gonna go give the driver a kicking, i'm relatively local so drop me a line
  • Glad to hear you are both relatively ok, but awful shame bout the bikes. It must be silly season as there are about half a dozen people in my local club that have had accidents in the last week or so as well.

    Take care people!
