    I got up Ditchling Beacon
    I got up Ditchling Beacon

  • You can rest when your dead!
  • You can rest when your dead
That was said to my mate after he struggled to get up a hill on his mountain bike.

It's gone down in history as one of those sayings.
  • Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up
It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed
Every morning in Africa a lion wakes up
It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle or it will starve
It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle
when the sun comes up you'd better be running
But unless you're a runner you won't understand

    A few of my favourites:

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

You don't do it to prove how fast you are, you do it to prove how tough you are.

As my Dad (a lifelong runner) said to me shortly before he died and when I told him I had entered my first Triathlon
    'Keep it up'

Now whenever I flag I just hear those words and keep it up.

I coach at a kids cycling session couple of times a month with local bike club. This Sat afternoon, pouring rain, driving wind, 4 year old whizzing round and round the cones set out on the tennis courts with a massive grin on his face, legs spinning like crazy on his 12" wheeled bike going "clockwork legs, clockwork legs, clockwork legs"

i dont know what'll keep me going on the umpteenth bike mile of my planned HIM next year but in my hard sessions what does the trick is this:

'...now pay...!!! pay for the wine, pay for the mars bar..pay for the session you missed....'

the list goes on....masochistic but it works...!

Harsh but true (and a lot less sweary than normal), and it works to keep me moving
  • When you get to the point when your really digging in...I like to motivate myself by imagining how I'll feel when I hear the words............

Can't recall which tri website it is from, but I do like the 'If it was easy it would be called football.' qoute.
