I have suffered with a bad back for years now and although i do daily stretches and core stability strength exercises i still feel discomfort.
I went for a sports massage just before chrimbo and i must say that i would rather give birth as it appears less painful.. However, the therapist said i am really bad all down the RH side of my body. I was then reading Decembers 220 and it included an article about self massage (no jokes please). I was thinking of purchasing one of these:
http://www.massagetherapy.co.uk/default ... e%20Roller
Has anyone had any experience of using these or any other recommendations
Cheers.
Gary.

Pilates - nuff said - worked wonder for my shoulder.
Foam rollers are also good, if you are hard core a marble rolling pin
Have you read the book "The art of backstretching"
link here
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Art-Backstretch ... =1-1-spell
During late 90's early 2000 I had a few years out of Triathlon with back problems. I came across the book
The art of backstretching and started doing the exercises shown in the book, they take about 10 minutes a day 5 days a week, Was a massive help to my recovery and helped get me back into Triathlon, I still do the exercise now although not as regular as I should.
I am no expert on massage although I go for a regular massage on my legs, my experience of the suffering you mention is normally when there is a tightness in that muscle area, I would persevere as it will gradually loosen up and feel a lot easier.
I also use a foam roller, tennis ball and golf ball for self massage, I think all of these help but not quite as good as my regular massage.
Get a tennis ball, put it on or near the sore bit and then lean against a wall (with the ball in between). Then move around to 'massage' the bit thats sore.
Works better than any massage product I've ever come across.
It's too hard to stop the urge to train though!!!!!! ARRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH
