Decent winter tyres.....

Just been out for my first winter ride on my new bike fitted with Scwalbe Ultremo R.1 tyres.....3 punctures with 1 mile was not how I envisaged my first ride.

According to Scwalbe "The addition of a ceramic coating is entirely new. Small pieces of glass that remain embedded in the tire and slowly cut their way through a protection belt are now stopped by the tough, ceramic particles that blunt the edges of the glass preventing its destructive migration"..........b*ll*cks!

I might be that they are not designed for winter riding, and I'm no expert so can anyone recommend a decent tyre, h ardwearing tyre for winter use????????

schwalbe marathon plus get good props in the bike commuting forums, or pretty much anything with a kevlar belt on the tyre to stop slivers and shards getting through.

keeping the tyres at good pressure and checking them over for bits that have got embedded really helps with longevity as well, but even with the best tyres and routines in the world something is bound to get through eventually!

Thanks Ris, will have to get some kevlar ones......had some Rubino Pros on my previous bike and never had a puncture in 12 months so maybe I was on borrowed time! The Schwalbe's were v quick and I suppose they'll be better on good black top in the summer, trouble is they're cut up now!

    Winter roads suck !!!

Just before christmas I had a puncture , after riding down a lane where a farmer was cutting the hedges by machine , and there was thorns everywhere .

    Farmers don't give a monkeys!!!!!!!!!

Next time i went out in the rain , another puncture ,suspected to by sharp stone washed up by the rain.

    Sorry for the rant !!!!!!!

I see that the Scwalbe Ultremo R.1 tyres cost about £30 each, Theres no way I would ride expensive tyres for winter training , You can buy something like the Rubino rigid tyre for about a tenner.
If you only have 1 set of wheels you would be better off having a cheaper tyre for winter training then a better hence faster tyre for summer racing IMO.

After having had 3 punctures in 4 rides (my old tyres were shot), I went out and bought the best winter tyres I could find - Continental Gator hardshell. They were pretty expensive but if they are as good as they read and I don't get any punctures through Jan, Feb and March, they will have been a decent investment!

Initial thoughts are that they are pretty good and ride pretty quick for a winter specific tyre.

I usually buy continental (4000S) and these appear to be a good winter replacement!

Iv just bought a pair of Continental GP 4 Season tyres....

They are quite possibly the best tyre going....

Other than the Competition Tubulars I use for racing:) but these are the best clincher tyre going in my book for overall performance... excellent puncture protection, excellent grip, good wear rate.
  • +1 for Schwalbe Marathons. Got some on my Brompton, riding six miles a day on the crappest roads in central London, and haven't had a puncture in a good 18 months. Now touching wood frantically! I'm sure they'd be just as capable in 700C as shopping trolley size.

On my road bike, I use Conti Gator Skins and seem to have drastically reduced the number of flats I get riding on more rural roads.

Can't recommend either of these tyres enough.

    bontrager all weather tyres..

since putting them on, no probs.

caveat... the bike has not been outside for weeks... I refuse to cycle her in this shitty weather.

turbo's all the way....till it gets better.
  • Bontrager race X lite armoured tyres.

Had one puncture but that was when I was forced into a sharp shard of metal laying ion the road by a dangerous driver ( he was forcing me towards the kerb and I had no where to go)

No punctures other than that so pretty good.

Thanks for the advice chaps. The R1's were the tyres that came with the bike so i'll take them off and save them for the summer. Not really a winter rider myself but it was a new bike and I've been itching to take her out so when Sunday was sunny with no snow or rain I couldn't resist......
