Elbow Guard and Helmet?!

Well, after having spent some time recovering - all of 5 days - I am out running, doing the stationary bike and will hopefully soon be able to swim again. The broken elbow and damaged shoulder will take 6-9 months to completely heal, but the good doctor said that my pain threshold is the only limitation .....

In order to back-up my recovery plan and avoid further damage, my doc suggested protecting the elbow on bike rides. I intend to start riding again as of February and need to purchase an elbow guard/protector. Most of them seems to come from the MTB range for obvious reasons - any recommendation on products you have used before that are reasonable priced and not too uncomfortable?

Also need to buy a new helmet, as the last one shattered during the accident - any suggestions?!

  • Personally I wouldn't risk biking outdoors with a trashed elbow/shoulder - I'd stick with the static bike doing intervals and other HRM workouts to keep up bike fitness. Unlikley to be a great loss of form but there is a definite risk of aggrevating the injury.

    It depends on what level of protection you need I suppose. There are hard shell ones and padded foam ones. I've used hard shell Dainese guards before for snowboarding which were very comfortable and adjustable and have also used foam padded ones, which were Pro-Tec I think. Found the padded foam ones less comfortable because they aren't adjustable and also do not take heavy knocks very well. The hard shell ones were the best all round in my opinion but you'll find them more expensive.

    There are loads of brands with Dainese probably being up there as the most expensive. Sixsixone used to do a good MTB range which might be just as good but cheaper.

    Check with the helmet manufacturer, you may be able to get a replacement for much less than a new one.

    I go along with Jibby, if your old one protected you when you needed it seems like a good reason to get another as a replacement

    SixSixOne body armour is absolutely awesome stuff. I used it for powerkiting, and some of the buggy stacks I had would have left me seriously broken if I wasn't wearing their Pressure Suit, yet with it on I was never injured.

    First time I put it on I ran at a wall to see how good it was. It's very good, didn't feel a thing

    Not sure if the pressure suit is overkill for what you're after, but this is the current model;

    That looks mean - wow! Certainly would give the added protection for the commuting ...

    Where would I put that in my transition set-up ...?
  • Wear it under your wetsuit. Sort out the OW swim ruck.
