Swim drills

Just looking for a little help with regards to swimming.

Im training for IMUK and with my swimming I am simply plowing up and down gradually increasing total distance I cover during a full session. I typically range from doing short intervals (50-200m) and longer intervals (400m-800m) or a full distance session (1500m+).

However as I read through different texts it seems obvious that I should be regularly incorporating swim drills into my training to develop my technique. However I cant seem to find any non equipment (fins etc) assisted drills, I cant use fins etc because my local pool wont allow it (I hate councils - but thats a seperate issue).

What I am basically asking is does anyone know of any good resources (websites, videos etc) that have swimm drills I will be able to use in my training.

Also does anyone know of any good tests that will determine my efficiency in the pool (not that bothered about things like threshold or 400m pace etc).

Left arm, right arm, catch-up, full-stroke, 10secs rest. Repeat until your form fails. No fins or other toys required.

Bopo - tried those drills today in my first swim session in 6 weeks. Really enjoyed it and covered nearly 2k, furthest I've ever swum(/swam/swimmed/swommen?), and definitely felt the benefit of the drills. Cheers!

Another good drill I like is using fists (I wouldn't recommend typing that into google though).

You really have to use your forearm with this one. After when you use you hand it feels like you're flying through the water.

A variaton is to use fist, then add a finger each length. Again that just sounds soooo dodgy!
  • you could try your local tri. club,
in my own experience the coaches are full of great info and advice & group swimming helps improve your speed.
