Trying new bikes...

Hi Y'all!
Knowing nout 'bout bikes, was looking at this one at Evans (V helpful peeps) at the weekend:

http://www.evanscycles.com/products/bmc ... e-ec020518

Does anyone have any feedback on it, at all?

Also, when I go and 'test' a bike out in the bike shop carpark - what on earth should I do apart from go up and down a bit - already being nervous enough, to gauge how it will be for me?!!! I will be using it for sprint tris and bombing up and down hills in my lunch break at work...

I have been riding a 30 year-old road bike - which I love - but have never tried anything else, and have £1,000 (OMG! SUCH a lot, I feel quite nervous!) that I can spend on my new bike.

(They let me try a £2,000 bike at Phil Corleys at the weekend - I shoulda kept riding - it was worth more than my car!!!!)

I haven't tried that particulr bike, nor the brand so I don't know how good it is - but it isn't red... so it won't be fast.

yeah i'd of kept going on the £2k bike too

All I know about the BMC brand is that their Top Range bikes are outstanding. Not sure on their lower level bikes though......

When I win the lottery ill be buying a BMC TT01...lol just need the £9000 pound to cover cost of the frameset alone though......

Evans can be shit for customer services but also can be very good, I think its all down to the individual shop I think....

If you have the money and like the look of the bike go for it.

for £1000 you have so many bikes you could choose and everyone will say buy this buy that.....end of the day if you like it BUY IT.

Just make sure it fits you properly.....just riding around the car park wont give you a good feel on how the bike rides and how comfy you are on it.... Ideally you need to have a ride on it for a while....but youll prob notget that from Evans.....however again IF YOU LIKE THE LOOK OF IT AND IT RIDES WELL IN THE CAR PARK AND IT FITS WELL BUY IT AND ENJOY!
  • Ooh! Thanks, Hussler! I didn't know bmc did great bikes at all (doh!) so I hope you DO win the lottery and treat yourself, and I hope the entry level bikes are as well-made too... Fred at Evans in MK couldn't have been more helpful - so I will def go back, take my aged bike to show what I'm used to, and trust that they don't stitch me up!
I really appreciated your reply - thank you - it has made me feel more confident about making a decision!
  • I don't know anything about that particular bike except that 105 is a fine groupset but Bikeradar has tested a couple of BMC bikes here: http://www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/cate ... ge=&_brc=0. All three of their bikes that are tested get great scores so i would not be worried about the brand. Enjoy!

I know you didn't ask 'which bike' but I will throw one on for you that is highly regarded on this forum for the same price and that is the Boardman Team Carbon
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165710
True it is through Halfords but you may want to check this one out as well as a lot of peeps on here rate them highly .. and it is carbon! All praise to the mighty god Carbon
  • Looking at the bikes specifics I think you could get a bit more bang for your buck elsewhere.

Wiggle do a Focus Cayo 2009 for about £1200, yea its a little more expensive but it firstly gets very good reviews, its a carbon bike (BMC is alloy), it has shimano ultegra groupset, and has mavic cosmic wheels which I know is an excellent wheelset.

Personally I think for this money and this time of year (if you are going to get a 2009 bike) you will be able to get a lot more for your money than the BMC.
  • Thanks sooo much Zacnini & Rush1884!

I am loving the look of both of em! (Esp the Boardman! I will have to nip out to Halfords asap and take a peek!) BUT would either of these carbon beauties would be ok for bombing up and down my oh-so potholey Chiltern Hills?

    Not too precious?

I'm Bu**ered (& that's NOT "buttered"!) if I spend £1,000 of hard-earned I want to use it EVERY day and be sooo proud, but omg, the lanes round me are rural and rubbishily lumpy...

(actually, that sounds like a description of me)

There was a thread about alu v carbon here alu-vs-carbon-decisions-t48278.html

For day to day use I would intuitively tend towards alu - but there again someone who uses a carbon daily may prove me wrong. The Boardman also comes in alu http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... =IOV4PDPZ1 and is £200 cheaper so may be what you are looking for. And if you can get it through cycle to work will lob another fair bit off - decisions, decisions eh!

    Hi Pip
If your surfing round for a new bike, try looking at the new Valdora Tri bikes starting at under £2k for a SRAM Rival build . Good reviews from all their customers over the pond, plus its a carbon frame thats not one of your ''open mould stick a sticker on frame''. If your interested contact me at pete@bikesales4u.com

    Good luck with your browsing
