Ironman fees?

OK, so I've entered my first race and I've become curious about the half ironman but having looked at a few I just wondered what the extortionate entrance fees are for? i.e. what are you getting for your money? They seem very high fees!?

    If you are looking at official mdot ironman / 70.3 then the costs are pretty high, but there are loads of long/middle races which offer the same distances at comparitively cheap rates. Challenge series, outlaw, bit and little woody etc. None of them are 'cheap' though, really!
