Project Avoneer Underway - Bike Porn Thread

Hi All,

Thought I's share my bike porn thread with you.

Gonna be building this frame up over the next few months on a very strict budget.

Forks and headset arriving later this week so will update then.

  • Nice frame! What is your build plan?

Do you know the weight and where did you get it?
  • ZacniciZacnici Posts: 1,385
Are we going to get a series of step by step pix during the build? That would be different.

Good tag line by the way - poor cat!
  • AvoneerAvoneer Posts: 174
Lol - I pinched the cat signature so don't tell anyone

Yeah - plan to do a build up report as I go.

Forks and headset arrived today so more pics soon.

Current weight of frame, seatpost, forks and headset is approx 2.4kg.

  • I like the frame.....why don't you turn the thread into a Blue Peter type guide? Then we can all have a go!!!

Did you have to face off the frame where the bottom bracket fits?
  • AvoneerAvoneer Posts: 174
    Hi,

Yeah - wasn't sure if anyone would actually read this and wasn't sure how much detail to go into.

Bottom bracket was faced and the threads cleaned by my mate who works at a LBS so not a bad deal for beer tokens - well actually, he needs some bits doing to his car so it's all swings and roundabouts.

Keep looking at carbon wheels and then reminding myself how much money I haven't got

In the process of building 3 bikes at the same time so switching parts between them to end up with one daily all year drop bar commuter, a road bike to sell and then this race bike - it's a bit of a head scratch at times.

Should have the chain rings and cockpit put together this week with any luck.

    Hi All,

Quick update - after my thread here (tubs-or-clinchers-t49292-10.html) on tubs or clinchers, I bit the bullet and picked these up today (see below):

What can I say - even more bike porn.

Just got to save up for some tubs now!

Is there anything better then unpacking stuff like that?!
Wiggle doing a good deal on Conti Podium Tubs at the mo...a tenner cheaper each than PX and they have the removable valves for the extenders. 2off 40mm for the fronts and a 40mm and a 50mm for the rear.
    <edit>
I've only just noticed the rear drop outs dont have the horizontal slots to move the wheel forward to get it up to the seat post down tube.
I'm off to look and see if the new Exocet is similar.

    Looking at Wiggle now.

Would have liked the tyre nearer, but you can't have everything and I'm only up to £555 including the wheels so far........

Exocet does have horizontal drop outs:

This is like a 'strip tease' - it's all in the anticipation and I'm sure the end result will be worth it.

    Hi All,

Bit slow on the update, but more carbon porn for you:

    All done - for now.

Had to lathe a new sunken bolt for the front caliper as I couldn't get one long enough and I wasn't gonna pay a shed load for one when a 25p bolt could be lathed down.

1st race in a few weeks and it will be a hilly one - Buxton Tri.

Not sure how I'll get on with a 39/53 as I'm used to my 36/50 compact but in for a penny.

Total cost of bike is hovering around £800 so far so that's not bad is it!

Gonna stick with poverty pedals and toe straps until I feel comfortable with the bike.

Also got some straighter (with the kink rather than the pointing up) aero bars to try and decide which I like best.

  • very impressive! in fact it has got me thinking. I'm desperate for a new bike, although my road bike is ok I do feel I need a TT bike but with getting married next year finances are understandably tight but I have asked that nobody gets me presents for Xmas and my birthday the week after just money for trathlon "stuff" (my mum for example has said she will get me a new wetsuit as mine is starting to look worn as was an entry level anyway)and I didn't realise how cheap it can be to build a bike like this - obviously its still on a budget but you're saving money putting it together yourself. Coupled with this is my very limited bike maintenance skills so by putting together a bike I would learn a lot more.

That's a very impressive bike for the budget Pat

I have also been more 'hands on' with my bikes this year and learnt a lot, sometimes the hard way. I am also doing a build and it is satisfying when the knowledge base grows and touch wood so far haven't made any expensive mistakes.
