Ironman bike - Which bike? What have you got?

Hi all,
Was wondering what people use for the Ironman bike leg and is it different to your training bike?
So two main questions:
What have you got?
Any pics?
Cheers,
Andrew

It completely depends upon the course.

If it's a tough hilly one, most people use a road bike with clip on's. If it's not too tough, then tri bike is the way to go. Very much depends on which one you are doing and what your own ability/ experience with a tri bike is.

I recently did IMCH and used my Felt B2. I've been using it non stop (for all training rides etc) since march and love it.

Very much down to own personal experience and opinion though!
  • I used a specialized allez with clip ons for IMuk, and for the Outlaw long distance I bought a Quintana roo seduza for the outlaw and trained on it all year but it died 4 weeks before the event so I went back to the specialized but after spending loads of time training on the tt bike I found it comfortable enough. Really its what you would be happy/comfortable with that counts.

Well, its time to descend this into a bike porn thread.

I have two bikes, one a totally unloved and abused LeMonde Reno which cost £500 5 years ago and has no done a bazzillion miles.

For everything else inc ironman I use the below, The Black Bomber.....
Hmm - Nice bike! It looks more expensive than my car!
Note to self - Must get new credit card

Me, living in the real world, I use a Boardman Team Carbon, got it cheap at Halfords, had it 18 months or so, and it's got me a 100% finish record, from Sprint to IM, without any major mechanicals.

For IMCH this year I used my Look 576 (red/Black so its fast) with Campy grouppo. I did a lot of training on it - especially on the turbo, but most of my hilll training was on my heavier roadie...

Pics, um thats a great idea I really should sort some out actually as i haven't done in a while

Whilst on the subject of bikes for Ironman what would be the best cassette to use for Ironman uk.

I used a 12/28, the 28 being my 'comfort blanket' for Sheephouse Lane, the main hill. Just spun my way up without any issues, and got on with the rest of the bike leg. But I wasn't going for speed, just a pleasant day out with a bit of swimming, cycling and running thrown in, and a medal and t-shirt to some home in.
