Hi all,

I am doing the blenheim in a relay and my cycle guy wanted to know about the course, how hilly it is or undulating etc. Any advice from you all is much appreciated. Could also do with the same info on the race course.

    Top tip for routes:

Google Maps, Street View excellent to recce from comfort of your own home
Maymyride http://www.mapmyride.com/ Very handy for Km markers and also elevation

Have a look at the route map http://www.theblenheimtriathlon.com/BTMaps.html then use the above tools

Have done Blenheim 10K, very undulating, challenging run

It is "undulating". Although the hills are not long, they are steepish. Also need to watch other riders because the road is fairly narrow.
  • Interesting comments Re the bike being undulating - steep hills etc....

Would people recommend a road bike or is a Tri / TT bike fine for this course?

I have only just bought a Tri bike for the 2011 season so not 100% confident on it yet - wondered if the Blenheim bike course lent itself to a Tri bike or is it just as well using the road bike (short sharp hills are easier for me on a road bike).

Switch the map to one of the satellite views, then move your mouse over the altitude/elevation profile to trace over the route getting spot heights and distances.

Would use a road bike with clip-on tri-bars over a TT bike due to the hills/undulations (short steepish climbs) and the high speed descending on a single track road with lots of other cyclists (some novices and not very predictable!).

    Hope that helps,

Last year there were plenty of TT bikes on the course. Doesnt mean they were the best choice though.

I am mulling on same question. Few weeks still to think about it!
  • Interesting to hear about the 'hills' at Blenheim which I'm doing for the first time this year. Any ideas if the hills match Bala, Llandudno, Harlech courses?

Any comments on T1? I've heard it's a bit of a slog to it.
  • Seamus237, having done both Harlech and Blenheim, I consider both pretty flat to what I usually race bar the hill at the start of the bike in Harlech!! Short sharp inclines at Blenheim but a reasonable rider will easily cope with that and maintain a decent speed.

The run to T1 is a pig, uphill and long, really will sort out your legs.

    Enjoy.

  • @Tri Pencil, yeah thought as much when I looked at the map my run profile. Not looking forward to T1 now though. Thanks for the feedback.
