Cycling Shoes for Off Road Duathlons

Having made the decision to start training with focus again after too many static years I'm looking at breaking myself in with a couple of off road duathlons over the winter before getting my first tris under my belt next year.

So question is thus , what sort of cycling footwear is suitable for off road duathlons - appreciate that personal preference accounts for a alot but anything to definitely avoid? Is the Shimano SPD system the one to gor for? or as a novice would toe clips make more sense.

The bike is a reasonably stout Mongoose Tyax Elite hardtail - but never used a clipless system on this(also have a Cannondale R500 road bike with the Look clipless pedals).

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.

I would go for MTB shoes with SPD cleats - fine for Road riding and great for off roadng too

Agree on the MTB shoes, but I might suggest going for a Crank Brothers system for your pedals / cleats, have a look at comething like Candy C - they shed mud much better than other systems...
