new road shoes make my toes go numb

hi folks

have just purchased some new spd pedals and spd sl shimano shoes and after the school boy errors, like falling off my bike and still being attached to the bike lol ... I seem to get numb toes after about 12 miles on bike and I'm slightly concerned as I have an Olympic distance tri in July and don't fancy hitting t2 with no feeling in my feet lol...

any ideas folks or is it expected in new shoes .... ?

thanks in advance

BTW the shoes are shimano sh-r064 spd sl

Mike

Cycle shoes supposed to be snug but pinching is oft complained of, you may want to look at these:

  • Don't do them up so tight ?

Have you got the correct size ? And no I'm not joking

+1 for not doing them up so tight. I've been guilty of this in the past especially in winter when I'm wearing thicker socks than normal. I do the shoes up to the normal 'summer' position and then get cold toes due to lack of circulation.

Also get your cleat position checked. You may be putting the power down across the wrong section of the foot, in turns making the foot go numb.

Oh and don't do them up so tight!

hey folks, thanks for your advice ! ;-)

I have moved the cleats back a fraction and haven't done the straps up tight and it seems to of helped. I have a long ride and run tomorrow so I will get a good idea of whether it has solved my toes etc

fingers crossed or be that toes lol

well yeah ! I moved the cleats and made sure my straps were loose and after a 30mile ride my toes were pretty good. not a 100 percent but a lot better than before. tho they started to get numb around mile 20 so I unclipped my right foot from the pedal and let it dangle for a few secs before re clipping it back onto the pedal and hey presto the numbness vanished lol

I'm guessing the shoes are still new and still have alittle room for adjustment. I haven't altered the height of my saddle yet, so will play with that next.

I have noticed since moving my cleats the tops of my legs get a better workout
and even a little burn when I'm pacing.

thanks for all your help folks
