Triathlon Starter Packs

Hi there,

New to this forum so please be patient

Basically I decided a few months ago that I want to start doing Triathlons. However due to having a young family the costs have prevented me doing so thus far (What an expensive sport BTW).

Anyway, I started training, getting my running up to a decent level, swimming etc and trying to do any cycling in the gym as I could. I'm currently looking at buying a bike, however i've seen this package which I believe would be the best option for me. Its from 'Triuk.com' and consists of a bike, clips, pedals, helmet, Tri Suit and wetsuit. Its £749 and is payable over finance at 0% over 6 months.

here is a link - http://www.triuk.com/products/tri-uk/tr ... age-1-2012

The bike is a giant Defy 5 Triple, the wetsuit is Foor Quantum. I realise these are the low end spec for both bikes and wetsuits, however i'm a realist and realise that as i'm not going to be competing at the highest level (yet ) and from what i've read up about the sport, not breaking the bank to start off with is essential (unless you can afford it).

Now what i'd like help with is if you lot reckon this is the best option for me. I have around £300 - £350 saved up which I could put straight onto this, or i'm guessing I could get a relatively good second hand bike for not too far off this price. The problem then arises that i'd need to shell out on Tri suit, wetsuit, pedals, shoes etc.

Should I just go with this package and then improve each item as and when my finances allow me to?

Thanks in advance for any support, advice offered.
Have a nice weekend

    Hi and welcome

These packages can be good value when you tot up the individual prices

The weak link is the bike which is a triple, great for touring but not mega for racing, but you are being realistic and the aim is to get racing and the 6 mths 0% helps

Question, does your employer have a cycle to work scheme? Check it out, mega savings.

An alternative which is a bit more expensive but has a compact bike rather than a triple might be :

    Bike Specialized Allex http://www.evanscycles.com/products/spe ... e-ec030703

    Wetsuit http://www.wiggle.co.uk/orca-trn-wetsui ... sion-mask/

    Shoes http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-t10-triathl ... k%2fSilver

    Pedals/cleats http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/27098479 ... sbar&cbt=y

    Tri suit http://www.distance.co.uk/Tri-Suits/Mor ... n=Distance

Thanks very much for that mate.

I have actually been toying with the idea of just outting the money into a decent bike and then building up the rest of the kit in time.

Wetsuits/Tri Suits etc can be left for the time being and I can start off just doing Pool based Tri's. Thanks again

If you're planning to do a few more triathlons, then it may be worth you getting the items separately.

Fit is important on the bike, wetsuit, shoes, helmet etc. I don't just mean that you buy a medium instead of a large - I mean that one companies medium will be a different shape to another companies medium. Even cycling shoes differ with Shimano apparently being a little smaller and running shoes vary a lot.

What that all means is that buying an off the shelf package will almost certainly not give you the best fit in everything even if it gives good value. I'd say that shopping for seperate items is a better bet even though it may cost you more.
