Heart rate

Can anyone offer some advice on the best training  zone to be in to improve my running.  I do a mixture of short and long runs as well as interval training but want to know what is the best heart rate zone to be in during the exertion phase of the interval

i've generally taken the view that intervals are at z4 (suffering) to z5 (utterly miserable). you can do 'light' intervals, that are more like high z3 efforts, but i'm not sure that you'd see as much benefit.

it does depend on what length of interval and what recovery period you are working to. shorter reps (more focussed on form) could be at a higher intensity where the recovery is longer (jack daniels running formula suggests these are 45-80s with up to 4mins recovery).
